I have connected my laptop to my 27'' full HD monitor via RGB connection. However, when I connect it through HDMI the quality is crappy, distorted I would say. Why this happens? HDMI offers better picture quality than RGB or it is nothing to hussle about?

You probably have to look for a 1:1 pixel mapping option on your TV for HDMI.

That said, my TV doesn't have one and I use VGA which looks fine with occasional interference.

I also think there should not be big difference in quality.

id say read up on the different specs of each cable and what it allows you to do. also, make sure you have a good HDMI cable as well.

Probably overscanning on the TV when you use HDMI.

The main reason why HDMI & DVI is "better" than RGB is because both are digital while RGB is analog.
Skips the whole digital to analog, send over cable and turn it back into digital.

Also HDMI does audio over the same cable, thus saving me the hassle of bringing two cables.

RGB and HDMI should look virtually identical. If there's a difference I couldn't see it on my 47" flat screen

What monitor is it? The resolution is probably not set correctly.

According to the sites I check, the difference is typically undetectable. Still, you are correct, the monitor showed a great picture but it had not been calibrated. The Samsung monitor was a loaner, which I did not purchase.
