I need a good set of PC speakers under $50 bucks. I am considering the Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer
or the Logitech X-530 5.1 5-PieceSystem with Subwoofer Speaker.

Which one is the better buy? Although both products are highly rated, I hear slightly better reviews from the X-230. I want to know if if I bought the X-530, do I have to use all 5 speakers. I looked at both models, and they are essentially the same in design and the X-530 is louder and has 5.1. If i wanted to use the X-530 as a three piece system, will the sound be as good as the X-230?

    Any insight is appreciated. Thanks

As for as I know you won't be able to use 5.1 sound without a sound card, but I very well could be wrong.

the x530 is louder because it has 3 more speakers. unless you need and have the space and the means for 5.1, it's not worth it. save your money and get the x230s

I'm pretty sure that if you have the right drivers, it should work fine if you connect the 5.1 sound system to your onboard motherboard.

I don't think so. I have the 530 and it has 3 connector cables. front channels, rear channels, and center/subwoofer channels. the front channels would work but the sub would not be getting a signal. I believe the 5.1 setup, along with a nice sound card, is a worthwhile setup, but I do a lot of gaming and music. lets just say a 6 speaker system can't hold nothing against a 3 piece when you turn the volume up.

I will be using these speakers to watch movies, gaming, and music. I have a laptop HP DV6000t with maxed out everything. So which is the better buy? the
x-230 or the x-530. I don't mind spending the extra 15 bucks to get the x-530, as long as the sound quality is good and comparable to the x-230. also, is it worth buying the OEM version of the speakers?

If you wouldnt mind spending a little extra cash, I would highly recommend the Z-2300's. Ive seen them as low as 80's within the last few days on some sites. its a 2.1 system, THX rated so it sounds awesome, and the sub can bump like crazy. Only bad thig about the sub is it weighs about 40 pounds and is big, but if it will sit in a room like mine is, its definitly worth it. A kid down the hall from me has the x-530, its alright, but my z-2300 is definitly alot louder and sounds a hell of alot better.

One more point of the Z2300s. That system is one of the best out there. For a 2.1 system, it has plenty of bang for the buck. Compare to the X230's and the other one you mentioned, the 2300 is alot better. (My entire dorm floor can agree too)
