Just got referred to this site by a friend, I'm starting college tomorrow and I'm in a big rush so i don't have time to search the threads for a similar post (i'm sorry). I got a new laptop and hard to trash my old one (only got to salvage the hard drive). I bought a SATA/USB 3.0 adapter so I could transfer all my old files to my new laptop. But the HDD doesn't show up as a removable disk as I expected it to. This is the product I'm using: Newegg.com - OKGEAR OK4250 2.5" SATA HDD to USB 3.0 Adapter w/ Cable & Silicon Protection Case
Yes i'm plugging it into a USB 3.0 port. Yes I tried the USB 2.0 port. Yes I'm sad :/
Help me, please and thank you
I'm not sure about the specs of the hard drive. all i know is:
SATA
7200 rpm
3.0 gp/s
5 V
800 mA

Well you left out a few important points: is the external HDD operating even though it not showing up? Assuming the external HDD is operating correctly and you've connected the HDD properly and all your connections are functioning, I would look to insufficient power. Is there an additional power port on you external drive? I suspect that your adapter may be faulty.

no its functioning i'm 99.9% sure because it was functioning when i took it out. it makes a whirring noise and acts as if it is on so i'm sure it's on. the pc recognizes it as a mass storage device and all that jazz. it installs drivers and everything. it just doesnt show up as a removable disk; i cant access the files.
how would i correct the insufficient power problem?
it has been sitting on my desk for about 2 weeks. could dust have gotten into it? it hasnt been hit or dropped, etc -
Try using the HDD connected to a USB2.0 port if you have one. The cable has two type A USB connectors, one if for power and data (the blue one), the other is for extra power, plug both in the computer and the drive should be getting enough power. -

No, you shouldn't need to format, is the USB cable a micro USB 3.0 to single USB 3.0 port or micro usb to Y usb cable? The newegg pic hinted at a Y cable.
If it doesn't show up in disk management, then my guess is that the HDD isn't getting enough power to get the heads moving. Have you tried a different USB port like i suggested? -

Check this thread. From what you have posted so far, your situation looks similar.
Dynamic Disk Invalid
Please report back on whether this changes anything. Also might be worth trying to find the old machine, booting it up and then copying the desired files off onto a backup HDD. -

...what are you even trying to do there?
