There are cheap expresscards with nec upd720202 or Targus ACA34E, which one should I buy?

I personally have never tried the Targus but I do have an unbranded one with NEC chip, and it works fine.
The NEC chip is actually from Renesas: https://www.renesas.com/en-us/products/usb-assp/upd720202.html
Don't expect full USB 3.0 speed with either of them though, still they're faster than plain USB 2.0.
So just buy the cheapest one and try it yourself. -

Not so comfortable when you need mobility though, extra weight and size... so those cards do have their use. -
Thanks for your hints.
Hi OverTallman
Which unbranded one with NEC chip did you buy?
It seems that especially the cheap nec chipset cards get hot. May be the "slim" cards which fit to the case are more risky (?). I might stick to my docking station and usb 2.0. A hot electrical device in my laptop is not what I like.Last edited by a moderator: Aug 16, 2016 -

@schdrag FL cards and ASMedia cards do get as hot as NEC/Renesas. Depending on Expresscard slot location, it may only provide physical discomfort - or also affect temperatures of other components. I do not try to say that it's dangerous - many people use it successfully, after all - but it's certainly not as good as it looks.

Hi. Do you get any power out of these usb3 expresscard on the 2560p? Mine can only blink the led on an usb key but can't point it. Not enough power.
HP 2560p: which usb 3.0 expresscard (34mm)?
