    Folks,

This is my first post and I hope I am posting in the right forum.

I have a HP dv5040us laptop and it gets really hot during use. I have looked at different cooling pads but not sure which one to purchase since the location of the fan in my laptop is really odd. Its kind of in the top middle left(sorry if this doesn't make sense!!!) of the laptop. I have been looking at some cooling pads which draw out air and some that actually blow air into the vent which makes things more confusing for me.
I have seen the guide someone has posted on this forum regarding cooling pads but it doesnt really help me because as mentioned earlier the cooling vent in my laptop is oddly placed.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Thanks a lot X2P and your post is really useful. I tried to search DV5 but got all kind of other stuff. Do you mind pointing me to the thread or do you have some suggestions as to which cooling pads are good for HP DV5040us?

I think DV5040us is different than what most posts have which is DV5-xxx .
    Thanks for your time.

Thanks dfreddie but I think those might not work for me because I think my laptop tends to get really hot even though I am not a game player or use it for any other intensive operations. It is on all day long though. So its time to spend some bucks and get the thing fixed... :)

I will upload a snap shortly.

To double check your notebook is a 15 incher? are there any spots that heat up more than others?

Sorry for the late reply. The screen is 15.4 inches, I guess that's what you wanted to know. Usually the palm rest gets really heated. But lately when running for prolonged periods of time, it gets really heated and stops working. I reboot and then it works fine again.

I was hoping a cooling pad would fix the issue...thanks for the time..

Have you cleaned your vents and fans yet? That should help lower the temps a bit, especially if they're clogged up.

Hirohata - thanks for the reply. That could be the case too. I have once thought of opening up the back and cleaning but to clean the fan and the vents in this model of HP, its a nightmare. I would almost have to dismantle the whole pc just to do that...

I was thinking of buying pressurized air cans and using those but not sure if that would work...

I just read through the service manual for your laptop. Way too much of a hassle to do, although it'll be the most effective way. Well, using compressed air might help clean out the fan and vents a bit. Not too keen on which direction the air should be blown in from though... Always a good idea to keep the fan still when blowing into it as it may cause damage to the fan.

That's what stops me from even buying compressed air since I am not too sure which direction to blow the air in and where to get that dirt out from...
