I picked up an expresscard/54 digital/analog tuner branded HP, but actually made by Hauppauge. Comes up as model 885. The strange part is if I start the computer with the card in it, everything is ok. Processor settles down to normal levels etc. HOWEVER, if I plug the card in after the system has been up and running, 1 core goes to 80-100% processor usage (usually about 98%-100%) and the other jumps around from 40-100%. Constant. Doesn't seem to matter how long the card stays in or what I do, it just keeps using the processor like crazy.

My current configuration is a ASUS W3J running Vista Premium Upgrade (double install method). I'm wondering if it has something to do with my ATI drivers as they've been a constant problem over the past couple of months.

Has anyone had any experience with these rebranded tuners or the particular problem I have been having?

hmm.. I'm not exactly shure why it does this, but I get the same problems with that card, and I've tested it on both of my notebooks.

It makes one go 100%, and the other about 20% for several minutes, though I think that's because windows is doing things like checking for driver updates, and initializing it or something.. Might not be related to your problem...

Oh, and to make shure we're talking about the same card, mine's number is

    HP RMN HSTNN-TH15
REV C (third number down on the back of the card on the top right.)

Yup. Mine is Rev B, however. I've been having trouble getting Hauppauge's software to record. It gives me some dshow error. What software do you use?

I have the disk for it :) I couldn't find any drivers online.. Hmm.. I dunno about the dshow error.. I've been using mine basically just as a DVR for my cable :D Never had any issues that actually interrupted what it was made to do.

Have you tried updating all of your other drivers? video card, sound, Direct X libraries, then lastly the card.

My boss bought a dv9548us HP Pavilion that came with this Analog/Digital TV Tuner expresscard in question. Only one problem: I can't get the laptop to install the card. The driver CD that it came with has installed; From what I can tell, it puts the drivers in the directory C:\SwSetup\TVTnr2\. I point Vista Home Premium to the directory for the drivers, but it fails to recognize the card. The number on the back is the same; HP RMN HSTNN-TH15, Rev C.

I've spent 3 online chat sessions and a 90min phone call w/ Saresh in India. Saresh's last suggestion was to completely restore the system to factory defaults, which has done no good.

Is there some special trick to get Vista to recognize the card? Does it have drivers for XP? When I put the card in, it becomes recognized as "Multimedia Video Controller". We're both about ready to box this laptop up and send it back to HP at this point :)

Thanks in advance for any help,
    Josh Hogan

I'm having the same exact problem. Brand new dv9617nr. I just bought the HP ExpressCard Digital/Analog TV Tuner that was advertised in all the junk papers that came in the box (along with vongo and vonage and lightscribe etc). I "install" the "driver" from the cd and put the card into the expresscard slot. Windows recognized it as "Multimedia Video Controller" and said it couldn't find a driver. So I called... got someone from india...

... gave a bunch of (useless) information
    ... answered stupid questions like:
How did you put it into the computer?
    - Have you seen an expresscard slot. There is literally only one way to connect it.

All i got from the phone conversation is that "its probably a compatability problem". Something about the motherboard might only be pci but pci express is required, or something like that (forgive my ignorance). I could barely understand her... and then, with nothing resolved, she tried to sell me accidental damage coverage.

Compatibility... Brand new HP computer and Brand new HP tv tuner... not compatible? From the HP website "# Compatibility: HP Pavilion dv2000, dv5000, dv6000, dv8000 and dv9000; Compaq Presario V3000, V6000 models running Windows Vista. System requirements: Windows Vista, AMD Turion 64 mobile technology or Intel Pentium Dual-Core, Core Solo or Core Duo, or Core 2 Duo processors; 1GB system memory"

And whats with the CDs running and .htm file instead of an installer

Drhogie did you find a solution?

    Hey,
Incase anyone has the same problem with the drivers: I found one that works on my system. HERE

Actually found a link to it on Ebay. Finding stuff on HP's site is terrible.

Once i had that installed and working I did some backtracking on HP's website and found a newer version of the driver, which installed and works with no problems so far, except that on analog cable HBO causes Media Center to freeze, but I think that is HBO's fault.

that HP expresscard is JUNK!! You cant even hook up a cable from the wall to the cable dongle..it wont accept it. I just snapped my expresscard in half and threw it away.

I'll stick w/ my hd dvr box, that works just fine for me.

The video quality is pretty good, but I have had some trouble with the drivers. The maximum cpu when plugged in (without a proper restart, then it runs fine) is really annoying. I think I may have been better off with a USB solution, but I got the expresscard hoping it would fit better. Didn't realize it stuck out this much.
