I think this would be a great idea. People usually upgrade their lappy's harddrive sometime in the lifetime of the computer. I love how manufacturers are giving us Usb hubs on these coolers but I still hate to having the cords and maybe an ac adapter to plug extra space. Well why not power that old drive and fans still be able to cool our portables(2 Usb 5 volt sources?) and provide cooling for the drivethe drive. Maybe someone could hack an existing cooler with a usb to ide converter? Now that these large 17 and soon 19" beasts will need their own large models, I can see some space being availlable. It would make these coolers alot more valuable and space efficient. Or is this a bad idea because the harddrive would create heat where the product was designed for the opposite?

I've rarely seen such device with storage built-in..

Wait, there's a dell wireless adapter (+wireless detector) dongle which also have some internal storage ..

    ..

And some SD wireless card with some built-in storage ..

But that still doesn't answer your question, sorry

I have an idea. The pad SailorV mentionned has a 4 port usb HUB.

Why don't you hijack one of the USB port, and wire a usb dongle inside ???

I am building my own custom cooling base for my notebook, that way I have cooling vents lined up and so I get the anle I want an all of that fun stuff. That would be really sweet to put a 2.5" hard drive inside, then on the vent that pulls air away from the computer, it could cool that drive down too. Good idea. Props.

The main limiting factor would be the measly 2.5 Watts available per USB port. You could probably power some Flash memory and a fan, but not a HD and fan without using multiple USB ports for power.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't there some 2.5" external cases that are powered by USB solely ?

Yes, lots of them. Search your favorite retailer, I'm sure they have them.

Yes, but as I said, a single usb port can't provide enough power for a fan and an HD. You would need to use multiple ports simply for power, which would kind of defeat the purpose of putting a HD inside the case of the cooler.

Ok yeah I agree then that it may not able to power up a fan and a HD :)
