    Hi Guys,

Looking for some help in getting a new headset. I will be using the headset for pretty much just gaming, with music and movies occasionally. I am looking at the 'Razer Megalodon' and the Astro Gaming A40 + MixAmp, however I'm open to suggestions.

I was originally quite keen on getting the Megalodon, and Raziel66's mini-review assisted greatly, however I'm still a little skeptical still. The Astro Gaming A40 looks really good, however is very expensive and seems more aimed at Xbox gamers.

The laptop it will be used with is an Alienware M17x, which is 5.1 capable, but obviously can work with headsets with simulated surround.

Any suggestions you can give will be appreciated greatly.

Do yourself a favor and get a set of decent stereo headphone and a clip-on mike. That said if you really want a headset get the Sennheiser PC350. It has HD595 drivers. The Astro A40 is supposedly modeled after the HD555/HD595 as well but it is quite pricey with the amp.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I'd like to get a headset with a mic already on, aswell as some sort of surround. Something that is easy to carry around in my bag.

Headphones that have 'surround sound' are a gimmick. I too suggest that you get some real headphones, then a mic separately. But if you can't do that then I would suggest the Sennheiser PC350 if they have the same drivers as the HD595's.

I'm aware that to a degree it's a gimmick, but it's a gimmick that works in some scenarios.

    No

Even 2 speakers on a good pair of cans can give you perfect simulated surround. with 3dcmss on with my A700's I can very easily tell if somebody is above me, below me or what direction they are in.

    Hey Vicious,

3dcmss, does it take more processing power? And can it be used with onboard intel sound chips?

Na its a Xfi card feature, you dont need it for good surround, but for games that support it well its just a new beast all together.

BF2 made it sound like you were in the freakin game. Like you hear bullets wiz past your ears.

Yeah, see that's what I want. I know alot of good quality soundcards offer a internal software based 'Surround Sound' feature, however I am going to be operating off a basic intel sound chip, most likely offering nothing of the sory

Mirrors: It's not so much that I can't have sound loud, but I go to LANs and want to take my surround sound with me. ;) How are the Astros treating you?

Check out the Plantronics GameCom 377, or the surround sound version, the GameCom 777.
