I have yet to find one that lasts. I have tried three different ones. All of which stopped working after 2-3 months. For some reason, the quality of the USB power cables are incredibly poor. After a while, the plugs wear out and the fans no longer receiver power. This normally starts after about a month. Then it goes on for a month or more where the fan only works if you have the USB power cable bent a certain way. During this stage the fans are powered on less than half the time.

I never found a cooling pad to have an impact on sysem temps, although if the bottom of your laptop is hot, some with a great amount of airflow will keep the bottom cool. The biggest advantage to a coolpad though is that it keeps the laptop off your lap, insulating the heat so that you are in no discomfort.

Downside is portability- even ones that fold up take up space. Also, when you are using one, people think your laptop is immensely large because of the added thickness, and people think your laptop runs so hot that you NEED additional cooling. The worst part is that I have found people never left me alone while I was using one. I haven't used a coolpad for a while now- and I don't plan on it. My laptops run cool enough. My latest, an Asus Z96J, is perfectly comfortable to use on my lap.

I have so far tried a Targus chillmat,
Some sort of 4 fanned evercool pad,
and an AOC Hiyatek triple fan collapsable cooling pad.

None of these worked very well or lasted. The last one however lasted the longest, and by far had the greatest airflow. Dowside was, it didn't sit very well on your lap. Definately meant to be used on a table.

I went to Newegg and looked for the highest rated cooler. I bought it and I'm **** well proud I got it. Cools my temps extremely. Out in Colorado, it's been in the 90's for quite some days and this cooler really does the trick. Here's the link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834999336

kevcher's link is a good option to try to keep things cool on the go.
My dad has an old Dell i1100 which is pretty hot. I had to borrow it for a week, and I used that program to keep it cooler.

ScifiMike, nice coolingpad. Looks like you could cool off just about anything with that. Doesn't look portable though. And if you managed to get it anywhere with you, I would guess by looking at it that it must consume a lot of power and be a battery life deterrant. I might consider ordering one of those for myself for home use.

I usually just elevate my notebook on two books and then have a small to midsize deskfan blowing on the underside of the notebook.

It sounds kinda ghetto, but it works better than any cooling pad that i've ever used

HAHA. You should have seen the cooling system I rigged up for my old laptop. I was trying to see if I could keep the palmrests from heating up. Didn't work, but the bottom of the laptop got icy cold.

I setup this whole huge this with a mass of books, a cooling pad, a fan, and multiple ice packs. It was setup for max airflow, and to cool the incoming air as much as possible. It made the bottom of my laptop freezing cold, but it didn't do much else.

Would there be any way to bend or cut that front lip? My m1210's headphone jacks are in the front, so it looks as though they wouldnt be accessible
