IMO even the 3.5", larger models are reasonably portable. I got the Western Digital Elements 1Tb edition, and i'm very pleased with it. plus, the price is nigh unbeatable.

The size is up to you. if you are gonna take it any place get the small ones, but if it will always stay put then get the big one.

I usually get the Western Digital Passport 320 GB.

However, my latest purchase was The Hammer Morespace 500 GB for about $107.

The Western Digital 1TB My book is a great drive, and is quite fast also. I really enjoy it, I think you would too.

You can't go wrong with a Western Digital MyBook. 1TB can be found on Newegg for cheap.

Get the Seagate Freeagent Go, the reason i recommend it is because of the quality of the drive and the awesome support of after-sale and customer service.

I ran into a problem with my hard drive and all i had to do was just email them, they email me back in less than a day. Providing link and additional information.

Plus the hard drive is very small and portable, and the new model of the "Go" series looks even better. I think it is made of aluminum or something while i got the Classic one which is made of plastic.

Other than size, its important to note that the smaller ones like the WD Passport do not require external power and are powered by the usb only while the larger ones like the MyBook have an extra power adaptor that needs to be plugged into a wall socket

Might want to add that if you use it on a laptop the usb might not give enough amps to power an external drive that doesnt have a seperate power adaptor. Best would be one that doesnt require a power adaptor, but could be hooked up to one.

^The Seagate Freeagent Go comes with a usb that has 2 plugs. Like there is one that is for data + power and the other is for just + power.
