I am going to buy a 15.4 inch laptop, and I am somewhat skewed toward buying a sleeve. That way I can slip my laptop into any backpack that I want rather than buy a laptop specific bag.

However, there is a downside to this idea, because most sleeves are not very protective, while bags can be very useful.

I was very interested in the crumpler "sachel" because it has PVC as the outer shell, and soft foam inside. However, these are only made for powerbooks, so I am quite annoyed.

I am open to any suggestions, I would perfer a backpack over a shoulderbag.

I think the Sumdex sleeve might do the trick for you, if you're not too abusive with your current pack.

$%$#%!! I don't know what I just hit, but it trashed everything I typed.

I recommend a vertical sleeve, so you can take the computer out of the pack and sleeve in one shot. I don't have my sleeve yet, so I don't know how well this works in practice. Give these a shot:

Tom Bihn Monolith and Soft Cell
    www.tombihn.com
The Monolith is like a very deep plastic tray, with padding that actually hangs from the sides.

    Size Large CasePC sleeve
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=51850391&pfp=SEARCH
It's designed to be carried on its side, but, because the opening is at the top, it should work.

    Kelty computer sleeve/bag
    http://www.ebags.com/kelty/computer_sleeve/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=15741

Of these The Monolith should offer the most protection, but it is likely to be the least friendly in terms of computer retrieval. The other two sleeve types seem equally speed-friendly. The Kelty should be the fastest, and I'm betting it will be the best padding overall - except for the top. I'm not sure how much of a concern that should be. It is also only available in yellow.

    Good luck

I got the Targus Deluxe Messenger Bag from Staples on Sunday for $7 after $20 instant discount, $10 rebate and $3 coupon. It fits my DV4000 with 15.4" WXGA very well. The protection is good and it has a lot of compartments and pockets. I cannot ask for more with such little money. Indeed, it is a lot better than those I paid 5 times more before.

I just got the Sumdex impactguard, great stuff. I like the way it's got nice memory foam all around it.
