Ok, I have a camcorder and it has a mic input. I have tried a few different cables, two that I had and one that I ordered from Amazon. The one I ordered from Amazon by far has the least amount of static, but it's still there and noticeable when there's a lul in audio. I don't mind investing in a decent cable, but I'm not sure what to look for specifically in a cable to minimize static. I want a 10-12ft 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male patch cable, mono is actually ok because it's for mic only. It's going from laptop to camcorder.
Thanks for anyone helping with this.

They will be as good as any. Problem might be audio channel on your camcorder may be introducing feedback during the playback on the 3.5mm jack when you have the camcorder plugged into A/C power at the same time. -
Thanks again. Camcorder is not on AC power but on battery. I notice if there is no audio coming from the laptop the hiss gets progressively less like it has an auto gain, but once audio comes through it seems to be OK. I'll stick with my 12 foot I bought from Amazon as it seems to be doing fine at the moment.

If there's a hiss when no audio is coming thru, that may be the mic gain on the input or the volume level on the output is too high. Balance them out.

What do you mean by static? A constant hiss? If so then you basically need to adjust the level of gain. The camera might be capable of this, or you might need a box inbetween.
If not and you mean frequent crackles when you move the mic assembly or whatever, then gold plated plugs (or cleaning the contacts on the camera) will be the solution.
