In an effort to create something to prop up my laptop and create cooler temperatures , I tapped two pencils to the bottom of a ruler using transpore surgical type tape because it has a grip. It elevates it about an inch and has shown a bit of a difference. My question is , should I use electrical tape around it or will the electrical tape melt easier? My fear is that the tape will melt and make a bad mess. Thanks in advance for the input.

I find that duct tape is actually great for this kind of thing (and a lot of other stuff but that's beside the point).

The surgical tape you have is fine, however you may find that carrying a small book around, to just prop up the back is pretty convenient too.

Proping the laptop up should reduce surface temperatures quite a bit, because you are allowing air to freely flow underneath the system.

that sounds like an odd solution. is it comfortable? i find that store bought coolers are a bit more comfortable in positioning my machine. but in your case, i don't think going fancy is necessary. just stick something under it like K-tron suggested. should work fine.
