Can you post some pics and specs of your homemade cooler

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I bet my cooler is bigger and more powerful.
Here is a look at mine. 1034cfm at 4800rpm. Powered by two EBM Papst 172mm fans.
Nothing like German manufactured industrial fans.

    k-tron...

Very nice cooler but..do you stand up to use that? Or do you have external keyboard/mouse?

Maybe you've got a desk you can "Drop" it into, and therfore, appear to be built into the desk....so you can use it at desk-level

Now thats an idea. Maybe you could try it

Also, i've got the same Ti calculator :p

I built my own desk for my dorm room, which has a hole cut into it, which the cooler drops into. Another benefit, I can take my laptop, and use my fans as an airconditioner.

I have used it standing up, and its not all that bad. It takes some time getting used to, but it works great.

I bet you dont have the same ti-83 silver edition.
Mine has blue leds in it
    They run off the battery.
Its just for the awesomeness of doing it. Too bad the leds cut the battery life an aweful lot.
When I went to take my Ap exam, the instructor told me that I couldnt use my calculator cause I modified it.
I disconnected a wire, and made it look stock.

now k tron, do you have those fans pointed upwards or downwards?
cuz targus pads have fans that are like, downward, that suck the air out.

or maybe you just wanna levitate the vooodoo haha

Vicious, how many cfm is that fan.
Mine are more powerful, I can guarantee it.
1034cfm is enough to levitate the C90S.
My inspiron 8500 weighed a little over 7lbs and it would lift up.
My Voodoo weighs near 14lbs stock, and wouldnt lift up.
Now that it weighs about 24lbs, its not going anywhere.

I love my fan, it keeps my temps extremely low.

EDIT: The fans blow upwards toward the base of the laptop.

I dunno, however you can have a 1million cfm fan and it wont perform any better once you reach a certain point, there is a maxiumum heat transfer coefficient and once you reach the right ratio of fresh cool air to replace the warm air on the outside of where the heat is transferring too it wont make any difference. Much the same with people in water cooling there computers the myth of having a faster moving water loop cools better. I personally busted that myth.

Im not super science guy but its common sense if you think about it, plus I just used that to test and see if my c90 was crashing from heat, I dont actually use it for everyday use. The other thing that makes your super fans pointless is the fact that as long as the computer is functioning 100% and heat is not in any way causing hardware failure then further cooling beyond that point is useless.

My cpu and gpu overclock to the same point be they at 70c or 50c so no reason to have to have a jet turbine under my desk with some dry ice to keep it sub zero when I have nothing to gain. Id just use that space for a small desktop :p

The best cooler in my opinion is not the one that blows the most air or gives the coolest temps, its the most efficient. Meaning gives the temps you need while using the least amount of space & energy and is the most quiet. Thats why my Zalmans NC1000 is perfect.

I do everything based on efficientlcy like buy my computer parts. The best video card does not equal highest performance, its highest performance per dollar.

    Darn, he figured it out

I guess mine are not that efficient.
My fans require 36 watts each, so 72 watts of power max.
My fans are 24-36 volt adjustable fans, so I bought the only power supply I could find which could do that.
It just happens to be 500watts.

i think 2 massive fans is overkill. One will nearly be as efficient. Hows the noise on that thing?

I kinda have a similar setup, sorta looks like that but not home made.

Also i sit the my external HDD and AC power brick below the fans so it sucks the heat out it. Even if it does blow it on the laptop, doesnt really make much of a difference

Can someone create a "how to create your own cooler" guide?? I would really like to make a powerful cooler that really cools your laptop.

My cooler is quite weak. So I just use it as a stand.(well there is sill a difference with the cooler on than off, about 2 degress)

Give me the money to get some supplies and I can cook up a guide :p, I say 20 or 30$ should get you a nice cooler. Personally I would make mine out of plexi and shape it similar to that of my Zalman NC1000 but with abit more tilt, and use 120mm PC fans for the air, they push enough CFM to cool easy and are not that loud, not too expensive and you can rig power for them easy as well, directly from the laptop battery with a power dongle is what I would do.

My fans are pretty loud. When you crank them up to full, they generate 76DB.
Which is not bad. They sound good though.

My fans were a bit expensive. $185 per fan. Their expensive because their EBM PAPST. They are guaranteed not to die, so they are a good investment :D

I was just kidding about the money, although seriously I am broke and cant buy stuff right now and if a richer member of the forum wanted to donate to the cause I do have a paypal account.

Somebody else has built a cooler very similar to the one I would make, they even put neon lights in it I think.

If anyone here will try to build their own cooler I advice you to get somekind of filter for your air intake/fan. Keeps your lappy dust-free! Or at least slow the "dusting".

I used a 2500 rpm fan with built in filter for 15 bucks, 20-25DB, works great!

Actually, I am going to have to disagree.
You want a higher air volume fan. My fans have metal blades, so dust does not stick to them. My fans generate about 30psi of pressure along the botton of my notebook, which keeps air continually blowing through the system.
I have had my notebook for nearly a year, and have noticed absolutely no dust buildup. The pressure from the fans is enough to keep all of the dust continually moving clear through the system.

    andreasnicolai - nice homemade cooler.
You may get more bang for the buck out of it, if you undervolt your processor a little. This will help keep the temperature generated lower, thus making your cooler keep the system running even cooler.

k tron, wouldnt the foam liner on your cooling pad cause heat build up along the edges of your computer?

The foam liner, prevents the system from being scratched.
The temperatures of my system never rise more than 5C above the rooms temperature, even under full load.

The foam does not black any vents, and does not block anything which gets hot

Wow, a battery powered laptop cooler, that is cool.
I see that you probably got frustrated after buying the third set of 9v batteries, and went for an ac adaptor instead.

Its a good idea, and since you custom made it for your laptop, it will most likely work better than any cooler one can buy.

Calebsmerge i think your cooler would work more efficiently if you raised it 1-3inches off the ground. Using a sort of similar design as k-tron's and mine

The air intake looks a little restrictive. It could suck in alot more air if it was raised

    Cool home made design though

It got enough air in to do the job. The whole goal of that one was to be compact. The newer ones I have made are raised designs to allow greater airflow. The newest is actually quite a work, I will have to show it off sometime.

P.S. - I actually converted to AC because I had a spar adapter and used it more at my desk than while away from my desk, so there was no reason not to. Plus, it got so much more power that way!
