I have never travelled with a laptop but will soon. My question is: do I need an ethernet cable to connect to the internet in hotel/motel rooms? I will be OK if there is wireless available so that is not an issue. Thanks for ideas.

Normally, if wireless is not available the hotel will have short (3 foot or less) ethernet cables for you to use... Sometime the connector is broken, but they should have extra cables at the front desk.

However, I bring along my own longer cat5 cable just in case. It does not take much room to coil up a 20 foot cable.

OP, where are you traveling to?

ASIA: hotels have great... amazing internet access in rooms. most of them offer both cable and wireless.

EUROPE: older hotels/buildings offer only wireless and it is slower
    newer boutique hotels offer better

in any case, all regions, the internet charges are expensive in hotels.
they range from $15 to $25 a day... depending on the region and also on the type/class hotel you are staying.

as the previous reply said, many of them may be broken... but all you need to do is call a concierge and they can swap it out.

some hotels, you can actually carry a switch and have 2 laptops connected (if you are traveling with a buddy) without the added expense.

oh, some hotels, may offer wireless free in the vicinity of their business center... but differs.

if you really travel a lot and stay lengthy periods, you may want to check out serviced apartments. they wont scare you with $15 can of 10oz coke and expensive internet fees as many serviced apartments put in cable internet as a package.
