Usually its personal preference on those. I have tried curved and non curved and found non curved more comfortable. Although specific keyboards are ment to cause minimal stress it does not work for all.

depends some people like a external for gaming or what not, Because the laptop keyboard is to small, and who the hell uses a touch pad to play game or use programms??? its all personal choice but usally 70% of people would use a mouse with a laptop. And for a external keyboard not many unless they find the laptop keyboard to small or what ever their problem is eg. laptop keyboard doesnt work.

i have seen some desktop which doesnt have the curve and they are called ergonomic keyboards... any thoughts on that?

Another thing is about the curved keyboards which are either seperated in the middle or not. Which is better in terms of ergonomics? Would a curved keyboard be a hindrance when gaming for occasional gamers?

I voted no. I use a bluetooth mouse, when I am sitting at my desk (but that is not often) ~ and when out-and-about ;) :)

Other than that..it's the the lappy keyboard itself ;) :D

I use the laptop keyboard. I always have my laptop on top of my Zalman cooler, so the keyboard is at the perfect height/angle for my hands. However, I always use a mouse unless I actually have my G1S on my lap. Don't worry! My future kids are safe. ;)

I always use an external keyboard/mouse for my notebooks. That's why my E1705 stayed in the same shape it was when I first got it. Amazing notebook.

Currently using a Saitek Eclipse (first edition) and an HP USB optical mouse. I'm hoping on getting a wireless mouse, just waiting on a good bargain.

Now about the mouse, that's another story.

Since laptop screens aren't that big to begin with, using an external keyboard usually puts the screen even further away unless you have a keyboard tray. I have a Thinkpad T61p and the laptop keyboard works just fine for me when gaming, it just gets a bit warm.

Just a mouse here (Logitech G7) sometimes maybe my Wacom Graphire 4.

For the stock laptop keyboard mine is great, just as good as an external keyboard, but what I needed to achieve that is a cooling pad with a tilt on it. Now that the keyboard is tilted up some and not just flat I have no pain. Before tho yes my hands started to hurt pretty fast with the flat surface area to sit my palms on. It hurt the bone in the corner of my wrist.

GOOD typing your not supposed to rest your hands but rather hold them up in the air, I took typing classes so I know this but I didn't practice enough so I ended up being a "BAD" typist. I was more accurate with the bad method tho since my hands didn't move around and I do have issues being a disabled military veteran with my hands shaking if I do not sit them down.

On my home PC I use wrist pad to type on tho and its made for those of us with bad typing habits and have no pain at all.

I will challenge myself to use good typing the rest of the night and see how I do :p I can actually type faster that way honestly but I am just too lazy to do it all the time.

Last on the "ergonomic" keyboard. To my knowledge the ones that are labeled as ergo are the ones split in the middle. Its supposed to be this way to match the natural state your hands are supposed to wrest in and not make you put force on your wrist by changing that position. I cant type very well on them tho and the "6" key is on the left side but in typing your taught to use the right hand for that key so I always mess up.

belkin nostromo n52te! I don't know how to post pics but LOOK IT UP! it's more like a half keyboard just for gaming with the WASD keys and it's was meant for my 17" gaming x205 sli1 notebook and any other laptop for that matter also with a mouse, MAN! I'm happy! Oh but stay away from the saitek brand it's called the command unit and it isn't very ergonomic, made my hand hurt, so I tried the BELKIN NOSTROMO N52TE *wink* *wink* ok you've been notified.

I picked up my logitech cordless wave keyboard and lazer mouse yesterday, I will be getting one for my house PC as well. its super comfortable, not as looney as the microsoft ergo keyboard, just bent alittle to make it nice to type on. the wrist rest area is perf. leather, all the buttons are funtional as well.

Pretty well I have my perfect work space now as soon as I get my HP dock off ebay to get my monitor up and out of the way and all the USB connections, etc off the side of my Notebook.

I highly reccommend the Logitech cordless laser wave!

Questions for users with external keyboard:

    1. Do you guys also use an external screen?

    2. If no, then is it a bit too far to place the kb at the end of the laptop? Or do you guys put the external kb on top of the laptop kb? But this seems to be not so stable and can damage/scratch the notebook.

    Thanks.

I have my notebook on my desk where the keyboard tray is. so the keybaord is on the tray with my mouse and the notebook is infront of me.

no ill effects as long as you have a good quality keyboard like a logitech or ms. I had a cheap walmart brand wireless and it was a big pain in the rectum. I could not work efficently with it as my fingers were going faster than the keyboard could keep up. the new logitech is PERFECT!

if you dont HAVE to use the keyboard on the notebook, dont. its very uncomfortable. using a proper keyboard is much better.

I have my notebook for work and for traveling. I have a home based PC as well. My notebook monitor is probably the best monitor available. I love it. Its so good I bought the 22" home version of it. but HP makes great gear.

    good luck!

Ha ha.....its time for a sexy party! stewie rules!

Thanks for your info. I have a 13.3 laptop, if I put an external kb on the keyboard tray, I think it will be a bit too far for a screen at this size. I guess your method will work perfectly for bigger screen nbs.

And yes, it's always a good time for a sexy party!

I use an external mouse and keyboard. My mouse is just a regular Microsoft optical intelli mouse.

I just bought a Unicomp keyboard which is amazing. Its basically an IBM Model M clicky keyboard. Unicomp bought the tooling from Lexmark who bought it from IBM. Its about $70 for a standard keyboard but the typing experience makes it well worth the money.

A bit on the expensive side but I found the Logitech Alto to be pretty great. I'm looking at getting the Alto Cordless to replace the APC laptop stand at the office. They both hold the laptop at a angle and raise the display to almost eye level which really save my neck. The cordless with detached keyboard is a bit more flexible but either one is pretty good.

I use a mouse on all my laptops as i'm pretty much fed up with the current design of laptops with the touchpad front and center. It's really annoying typing along and all of a sudden the cursor moves to another part of the screen because one of your fingers accidentally touched the touchpad area.

I avoid it at all cost by switching to an external mouse. I know it's too much to ask but I would love to see one of the laptop makers bring the keyboard forward and eliminate the touchpad altogether and just go back to using the eraser head like the Thinkpad 380ED used back in the day.

I'll second the Logitech Alto Cordless. I've been using a notebook daily since 2003, and all that hunching over was definitely not good for my back. Even if I'd start out in a good posture, after a couple hours of gaming or homework I'd catch myself half bent over, staring at the screen.

The Alto has completely fixed all that, and is amazingly portable. It weighs less than my laptop and is barely larger in terms of footprint. Quite nice.

edit: and of course I don't use the touchpad, never have when I'm at home. Mouse ftw

When I'm at home, I just turn off the touchpad, no accidental touch will happen. :p

Check one of the Fn keys, you should able to turn it off too, on my laptop, it's Fn+F8, but different brands use different options.

lol... no no you got it all wrong, this stand is a stand only, you have to get your own keyboard, of course you don't use this stand with the built-in laptop keyboard, I don't think it's designed to be use that way. :p

I'm using a slightly curved keyboard, Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000. It's definitely an improvement over a non curved keyboard, but I also like how the keys feel, though they could be a bit flatter. The Logitech Wave looks good too though. Might want to get that one one day...

It's also better than the keyboard on my Dell, although the Dell has a pretty good keyboard.
