So let's say you plug your thinkpad yoga using mini HDMI into a monitor that has USB ports into it

So now those USB ports in the monitor will work?

How could a monitor, especially a large one, be able to carry the image from the laptop and also send the data from the USB 3.0 in the monitor to the laptop at the same time?

There is an ethernet channel spec'd in HDMI 1.4 which maybe it uses for USB. But there is likely a separate down channel USB port that you have to plug into your laptop as well. My LCD has two USB ports on it, but I have to connect a USB to my computer, so there's no magic involved.

There will be two cables you need to connect to your laptop (HDMI and USB).

The USB ports on a monitor work just like an external USB hub. You connect a USB cable from your computer to the back of the monitor. And then those USB ports will work.

The video signal is carried from your computer to the monitor via HDMI.
