Hi!
You guys are all so helpful, so I have another question for you!
I have a Gateway M680X on the way. I bought it primarily as a desktop replacement that lets me web surf in the family room where I can keep an eye on my 3 year old twins (ack! - don't ask what's happened to my couch while I've been in the office on my desktop...) Anyway, I think I will, sometimes, want to leave my house with it, just because I can.![]()
It's a 17 in. widescreen, so I'm finding very few bags that will hold it. Thanks to Coriolis, I checked out Crumpler. Such a cool site! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has experience or opinions on the Skivvy line (any size, just looking for usage opinions) for very limited travel.
Once in a while, I may want to take the notebook out to lunch or something. I travel by plane once or twice a year, and wouldn't have any interest in using my computer during the flight - it's too big for that - but would probably like to take it with me to show the family the newest pictures, access my e-mail, etc. I imagine putting the notebook case inside another bag for that, unless I could use the Skivvy as a general carry-on.
I also, at least once a year, drive the kids back to IL to the doting grandparents for 10-day-minimum visits, and I definitely would want to have at least a little protection for the computer in the old minivan - I don't see just tossing it in the back with the kids and the dog.![]()
Any opinions will help! Thanks!

Hey
Hmmm, you should know the size of the Skivvy is 16.1x13x3.2 inches at 17" and you should just try and measure your 17"..
But besides that, find a dealer in your area and look at it there..
For me, I took a huge chance, I had no clue if it was gonna fit, but it fits light a glove as I mentioned before. -
Yeah, I checked the measurements on Gateway, and I would have, supposedly, about a 1/2 inch on the width. But, the Skivvy's the only non-backpack there aside from the Horseman that would work in theory.
The Horseman seems a little pricey for what I'll use, unless anyone thinks differently. The Skivvy certainly seems reasonably priced for what I envision as use - there are a couple of Kensington Contour models that say they'll work, but I don't think I need that much, right?
-
Yea, the Horseman is the same as the bag I have now, just the refresh of it.
I guess mines was price cut for that reason -
Do you know if the Skivvy is also relatively good? I really think it seems in line with my ideas of reasonable budget and use. Do you recommend a lot or a little protection for what I'm using?
As a side, thanks so much for your help! This is my first laptop, and while I tend to think I'm quick to figure out computer stuff, this basic "what do I need" for the laptop is all a learning curve. -
I'm pretty sure all Crumpler bags have the sam amount of protection, the padding is pretty thick, almost 1.5" inches.
Hmm I looked at the store locator on the www.crumplerusa.com site and nothing close to where you live, I think. -
I haven't checked retail stores at all - I was just going to try to buy blind from their site. I do live fairly close to Boston, all things considered, but probably wouldn't drive in just for this. Thanks again for the input!

No problem.
Well, if you ever do pass by, you know what you gotta do -
How about the 'Dreadful Embarrassment', it's made for a 17"; I don't know about the WS though. I have the same problem with my 15" WS and I just purchased the Considerable Embarrassment, but the guy I purchased it from is currently checking to see if it will fit a WS 15".
How about the Crumpler 'McBain's Lovechild'?

Thanks for the suggestions. The Dreadful Embarassment isn't wide enough. I rejected the Lovechild, but I can't remember if it was fit or price, since I won't be using it every day - probably not even once a week.
-
I was looking at McBain's as well, but it should only fit the laptop, and a few small things, and thats about it.
-
Yeah. I checked again, and the McBain's Lovechild sleeve is too narrow for my needs. I went on faith and ordered the Skivvy 17 - I'll let you know how it goes. Luckily, I don't see transporting a lot of stuff with the notebook - maybe a couple of discs but it's not like I'm transporting a ton of paper files or textbooks.
How is Crumpler Skivvy for light travel?
