I have a couple of brand new canon laser all in one printers, never opened. How long can they be kept without losing toner quality? (I plan to open the box only when current printer has problem, so could be a year...)

A year should be no problem for the printer or the toner as long it is stored in cool dry environment, you might want to lightly shake the tone cartridge before using the printer.

Don't wait around to find out. Sell it now. Then get a new one when you will actually need it.

I agree. Buying "extras" like this don't make a lot of sense even if it is at a good bargain. Laser printers last a long time especially in a home environment. I had one for six years and only replaced it a few years ago because I wanted an "all in one", and it needed a new drum. Total cost of the drum and new print cartridge was like 80% cost of the new "all in one" machines.

Laser printer toner cartridges can sit for quite some time (years) with no problems. Inkjet ink cartridges have a shorter shelf life, though.

I have a Laserjet 8150DN I got off ebay 4 years ago for about $300 shipped. It prints 11x17 which is what I needed. We use it a LOT. It shipped with a toner cartridge and I bought an extra until the one in it ran out. I finally replaced it after a couple of boxes of letter size and one box of 11x17 went through it. It's old but very reliable. Has a duplexer and sits on the network with a DirectJet card. Had to replace the DirectJect card. The first rev were not great. Got that off ebay too. :)
