Hi, I just bought an 3.5 inch internal hard drive (80GB Maxtor) and an usb/firewire encloure(Speeze from newegg.com) to use as a backup for my thinkpad.

As the hard drive is new, it is not formatted. So, when I plugged in the enclosure, thinkpad finds a new hardware, but I cannot see the enclosure as a mass USB storage in the Windows Explorer. And I guess this is because the hard drive is not formatted yet.

Would you please tell me how to format the hard drive in the enclosure?

    Thanks.

I went through the same thing, so you get to learn from me rather than cursing the world like I had to do.

Go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management, there's a disk management tab down towards the bottom.

    Thanks, Brian.

I did not have to go through installing the new hard drive inside the desktop to format, which is pretty dumb but can be done.[ :D]
