...or stop it from happening really. It goes away after a while of being off, but its annoying!

I know my lcd is old, but still. Its a sony that i got in 2003 that still has better colors and viewing angles than any monitor i have owned since (24" samsung and a 17" dell ultrasharp).

Heres the damage and what causes it.

    Is it your wallpaper?
Why don't you try a program which will randomize the wallpaper.

Because i have to special make my wallpaper. I have 4480x1200 resolution and not many people have that. Its kind of a pain.

yeah but im always on it lol. its my left monitor and that part usually has free space unless i need it for something specific.

I know i could do all of those things, but is there a way to fix it on the hardware level. I mean rotating wallpapers, having a screen saver on with 1 min of non use etc are just like duct taping a leaking pipe. I want to know of how i can fix it without replacing it...or if it can even be fixed.

Well its not a burn in its called retention. The difference is this is not permanent. If i turn it off for a few hours its gone.

I'm amazed your Sony LCD is still going strong. I had two 2003 vintage Sony Vaio desktops with 2003 vintage Sony LCDs. My LCD on my primary computer (used for personal stuff and "play") started to dim noticeably early last year, just in time for my investment in a new desktop system. The OTHER Sony LCD (on my work computer) seemed to still be OK, but it wasn't used nearly as much as the one which ended up dimming (on my "play" computer.)

Ahh so something is holding capacitance causing the color to stick until leaving it off discharges it.

Thats a pure hardware thing, so your going to have to replace the hardware, or keep the image changing often enough to not charge up a certain color on the display.

I do not recall where I saw it, if it was a program a game or what, but there is something called bfi, black frame indexing, and pretty much it inserts a black frame between the normal frames you cant see it really and it would probably fix the problem.

Thing is I think thats a monitor tech and I cant think of how to emulate that via software except in video rendering. Maybe change it up and use motion picture backgrounds like Vistas Dream Scene?? You can emulate that with VCL and a plugin for XP.

    this is the guy

    http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/review/232/sony-sdm-hs73

and i did pay 499 for it at best buy

I do try and put my zune software up there when i can because that is motion, but i dont like to do to much cuz it lags the monitor down because its running through a usb -> dvi device (evga uv12 plus). It is a virtual video card which has the desktop rendered by the cpu. So the more things moving around on it the more taxing it is on the cpu.

I guess ill have to just get another 24" samsung and do away with the 2x 17. I think it will look better on my desk with them being uniform too.

    • turn your display off if you don't need it.
    • use an little animated ActiveX background.
    • Use a black wallpaper
    • Use a software like Ultramon to activate a screensaver on the external display
    • Use a wallpaper changer which changes your wallpaper every few minutes. You don't need a new wallpaper. Just duplicate your wallpaper maybe 10 times and each time are the pixels shifted upwards and left about 5 pixels or less. In the end you get a not visible and not noticeable shift of up to 50 pixels.

All these wallapper suggestions will not work as i normally have it filled with windows.

Turning it off makes no sense as it will get burned in as soon as its turned on again.

Why always have a screen saver on it. Then i can never use it.

We have a lot of LCD monitors like that at work. Due to the usage nature, the screen save is disabled, therefore the wallpaper is permanently displayed. It seems that the damage is permanent. I can even see the colors.
