    1. Desktop computer (or laptop computer that is functioning as a desktop computer.

    2. A thin and light slate wacom windows tablet you are using to annotate stuff you find on the web

You have a keyboard and mouse connected to your desktop by wires. You'd like to use the same mouse and keyboard for both the desktop and the thin and light wacom windows tablet and minimize wire clutter / be able to pick up your tablet and move it around without dislodging the connection

    What are your best bets?

If you want a hardware solution (either something where you physically flick a switch that tells the keyboard mouse to go to the tablet) or some clever bluetooth / USB solution

My experience with mouse/keyboard sharing software has not been good

    Check this out: http://synergy-project.org/

I used to have a switch where I plugged the mouse and keyboard into it (I think it had VGA too), and then a single USB plugged into both computers, and you used a keyboard combo to switch between computers. It was pretty slick and seamless. But something like synergy is a lot less clutter since you're already networked.

What you're looking for is called a KVM switch (short for Keyboard, Video, Mouse switch). Let you connect one physical mouse / keyboard (and even monitor) to control multiple different computers. Some of the higher-end switches intended for server rooms go far beyond just the 2 ports you'll find on inexpensive consumer models.

In any case, a KVM is pretty common hardware these days. Just about any one of them will work.

There's a great windows tool called mouse without borders that does this over the network.

I use Input Director for this task (only runs on Windows). It works pretty well, and also has features such as being able to copy files from one computer's Explorer to the other computer's Explorer. It's also free for non-commercial use.

I am not sure whether it will work on wacom but I do find the Wormhole Switch by j5create works quite well for two laptops
