Well I really really need an external hard drive because I am totally out of space on my laptops 80gb hard drive and I've already cleaned it out as much as possible. However I only have one requirement and its one that prevents me from going out and buying just any external hard drive.

I need an extremely reliable hard drive, at least one with a known reputation for reliability. I will video editing and I will be using the hard drive to do that as well as other data storage which takes up a lot of space so I need at least 250gb but reliability above all.

    Thanks for the help!

What HD size and portability do you need?

WD Passports are 2.5 5400's and USB powered. They also make a 3.5 but it isnt, its also more space though.

Buy a larger high performance drive for your notebook, and put the 80 gig in an external case if you still want to use it.

I'll also recommend the Seagate FreeAgent HD drive. Western Digital also makes reliable HD Drives.

You can easily build ur own. In fact that is what I would do. For 250GB you should probably get a 2.5' drive if you can afford roughly $150. That way you dont need an power adapter to use it.

I would recommend a firewire or eSATA option since you are going to be writing large amounts of data. Esata and IEEE 1394 will offer much faster speeds than USB. You can probably build your own drive for about 100 bucks. Recently a Seagate RK 500GB drive was available for around 85 bucks, and USB enclosures are available at many places for around 15-20 bucks. If you want a firewire or eSATA output, these enclosures will be more expensive. Also, make sure you have firewire or eSATA input on your computer.

The second option is to just get a 2.5" internal drive. A 250gb 5400 RPM drive can be had for about 100 bucks these days, maybe even less. Just take out the old drive and place the new one in. You can then use the old drive as an enclosure.

    Good Luck!

I have a Seagate FreeAgent hard drive (250GB) and I haven't had any problems with it. It's been great so far (7ish months).

I have a Western Digital My Book 500GB - never had any problems with it. Runs cool and quiet - hardly notice it on! It starts up when you power the computer up, and shuts down when you shut the PC down. Has both USB and Firewire ports so gives you the choice.

Its also excellent value for money.
