Hi,
I just bought a 17 inch laptop (MSI gx740) and can't decide which cooler to get. I looked through newegg and there are mixed reviews. So does anyone know any good cooler with good monetary value? I'd prefer if it is relatively cheap but can cool my laptop down for gaming.
Thanks!

unless ur laptop has terrible cooling a cooler will not do much to cool down the components on heatsinks. with my laptop i find that the cooler is only useful for keeping my hdd temps down. my opinion is to just buy one that you like with fans in the right spots (by right spots i mean for example a fan right under your hdds)

For what it's worth, I just picked up a Thermaltake Massive23 CS for my 17" laptop. I agree with ryokowashu, it won't necessarily cool your laptop down a tremendous amount, but it can be useful with the proper placement. I bought the Massive23 CS more because it's all-metal and the giant fan in the middle shoves enough air out around the edges that it works in conjunction with the fans already on my laptop.

If you can't decide on which cooler to buy, then don't buy any. That's what I did, when I found myself in the same dilemma. I had several hundred dollars to spend on upgrades for my laptop, and when I could find no clear distinction between brands--nor definitive proof that coolers did anything significant other than providing extra ports and "looking" cool--I didn't buy any. And after nearly a year of useful service, my laptop seems to be no worse off without it.
If I were you, I'd use this opportunity to employ the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." For all you know, you may not even need a cooler. That said, let me not be the one that casts aspersions onto the venerable cooler. After all, there is a lot of coolness in coolers.

17" and above laptops tend to be a lot roomier inside and the heat is not as much a factor as when you drop down in size.

i somewhat agree with u as most coolers on the market are pure bs products. there are a (very) few coolers that do actually work though. i honestly have never had a cooler before my NZXT cryo LX. i never even really knew they had such an accessory til i randomly searched for it one day.
i read many reviews and lots of info before i made my cryo LX purchase and could not be more happier with it. i can't complain about well over 10c degrees drops all across the board.
plus, i'll never have to buy another cooler again cuz the cryo LX will cooler just about any laptop 17" and down.
yea...tell that to the SLI/crossfire guys that are running quad/i5/i7/computer CPU's.
your statement might be true with mainstream laptops, but it doesn't really apply to gaming/high end machines cuz of their hardware.
remember guys: first step in purchasing a cooler is to find out what kind of cooler u need. different laptops will have different vent placements and exhausts. it won't matter if u have a cooler that can freeze water. it will not be as effective if it cannot hit your vents properly. read & research is key. -

use 2 lego blocks for some elevation...
use 2 dulpo blocks for more elevation... -
not sure why u gave me that link, but thanks?
-
I have the exact same laptop and was wondering if I should get one or not, thanks to this thread I now won't bother
-
if u really did read this thread then u woulda ended up buyin a cryo LX.
hands down one of the best investments for just about any 19-17 incher and under. -
Is that cryo LX really that good? Personally I would buy a cooler with much bigger vents, juts like Massive CS somebody mentioned in thread
-
still the undisputed king of active coolers for over 2-3 years, and that's without any mods either. u can take this cooler to a whole other level if u wanted to. plus, there aren't many, if any, that is able to cool such a wide variety of vent/exhaust setups, in such a wide variety of notebook sizes up to 19 inches. the cooler's body itself is cast from pure aluminum so the thing is also built like a tank. i also call it an investment cuz u can use this for all of yur future laptops as well.

Now, you see, this is the type of testimonial that confused me in the beginning, and now disturbs me when I hear it. You see, there is no de facto proof of any of those claims. If you had included "in my opinion" then no one can dispute what you said. Otherwise, any benefit from a coolers is, for the most part, just theoretical. Since without a control study and a battery of tests, it would be impossible to prove their benefits undisputed. Think about it, have you ever read a claim by any manufacturer? I looked around and couldn't find one.
But don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that coolers are worthless, or don't work. Rather, that there's no definitive proof to their benefit. In fact, some people have claimed to get as much temperature reduction from a strategically placed table fan--at a significantly lessor cost.
Nevertheless, the purchase of a cooler is an individual decision, that I believe should be left up to the individual. Since environments vary so greatly, it just might do you some good anyway. -
actually, there is plenty of "proof" to back up every single thing that i stated in my posts. i don't bs around, and i am definitely not one that just talks out of my behind. i only give praise where it is due. forget the "pro" reviews and all that bs cuz all of those reviews that i saw didn't even place their laptops in the correct position. go ask REAL USERS and ask them how well their cryo LX works. there's a reason it has not dropped it's prices after so long, and is still very sought after by people far and wide.
u name ONE cooler, on the market, that can come close to all the things that the cryo LX is capable of doing.
p.s. - your box fan comparison is irrelevant. so go read my post carefully. i did state that the MAJORITY of coolers out there are purely BS products. -
The Cryo LX seems to be the highest rated cooler, but I went with the Zalman NC2000, it's also well reviewed. Houstoned is correct that the Cryo is the most adaptable cooler out there in terms of vent/exhaust setup. I think the Zalman runs about $15 to $20 cheaper, but that trivial when you are spending over $50/$60 on a 'cooler' that may or may not theoretically do much
-
the NC1k/2k's are definitely a great cooler as well. they were just geared towards a different demographics. i would definitely consider one if i was looking for something more portable and quiet.
-
Can we change the fans of the Cryo LX?
-
of course. there are a few threads from fellow NBR members modding their cryo LX. another option is to simply buy a higher rated power supply and that'll make the OEM fans turn faster.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I thought I would just jump right in.
I actually had the same problem as you with my netbook and then I found Cooler Master's U2 cooler with a great modular fan setup. I'm waiting to see when this new U3 cooler with three modular fans and a fan speed clip will come out so I can get it for my work laptop. I see it on their website, but it doesn't say when it comes out. I'm glad that someone finally put the fan positioning up to the user instead of all of these weird mid level placements.
Here's the link to the U3 I found on their website. NotePal U3 - Cooler Master -

Actually you will have to. MSI GX740 has some heating issues especially for its radeon hd 5870. I had at least two computer shutdowns while playing a game.
I just bought a 17" laptop and need some suggestions on a cooler for it
