surround sound headphones with a built in Microphone... basically a good pair of Gaming Headphones
can not compute, please check your formula for errors.
surround sound headphones with a built in Microphone <> basically a good pair of Gaming Headphones
Formula Answer - True
Excel 2012 recommends you save money and look at regular headphones and an external microphone.
=if(you want good headphones, get some nice 2 speaker cans and a zalman Mic1,get a gimmicky surround headset) -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Hahah What? lol I'm not that smart Vicious that wen't right over my head
Really cool avatar BTW -

Basically telling you that the surround headsets are a gimmic and offer no advantage over a good pair of regular headphones.
Use logic, if a pair of Audio Technica A700's cost $100 for 2 nice speakers and a Piranha Headset cost $100 for 7 speakers. Do you think the company put the same quality speakrs and parts into it for the same price?
The answer is no they had to cut the cost of the speakers by 2/3, more cheap speakers is not better than 2 good ones. Plus the microphone thing is not nessisary, if your mic breaks on your headset you need a new headset, if you want to upgrade your speakers or your microphone you need a new headset.
If you get the seperate, if one part ever broke you can replace only the part that broke, you get more variety and choices, you can only use what you need (only mic for recording, or only headphones for listening) instead of always being stuck with both.
The Zalman Mic1 is a microphone that clips onto your headphone cord to make it function like a headset.
Give us your budget and we can give you some recommendations, also any preferences will help (do you prefer loud bass, good sound stage, etc) -

Well I would like to spend under 200 dollars
Closer to 100 the better -

Here's the thing I have a high qualit, professional grade Mic that I can just pull out and set on the table if I want to... what I want is a microphone that has a Mic Built into it for conveniece and hopefully quality as well....
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Since that clips to the headphone cord it works the same as if it was attached really. It moves with the headphones.
The only headsets I know of that have really good quality mic's is Plantronics, and they have good sounding headphones too, but its not going to be the same level as a nice pair of Senns or Audio Technica's
Its up to you if you think that convenience of a built in mic outweighs the disadvantages of it. To me it does not as I have had both in the past. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Ok, then I will go with your suggestion... just seems a little wierd that that 6 dollar microphone would be of really good quality lol
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
What!!!! lol what about this?

Even if you get a studio quality microphone, the audio quality is still going to be very close to a cheaper mic that you can pick up from Worst Buy because of the compression needed to conserve bandwidth in-game.
Get a pair of Sennheisers and a cheap mic, or just use the integrated mic on your laptop. When I play games, I use my laptop's integrated mic, and it sounds fairly decent, and thats with my face half a meter away from the mic. You've heard my voice in our games, MrButterBiscuits, haha. You know I'm a wild son of a gun, but my voice is clear on my cheap built-in mic. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
No I do Videos, in which I record while I play a game or I do a video review... and I need a good quality mike for that as well as gaming
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah I mean this depends on what your going to do, if its for gaming the Zalman is fine, read all the reviews it has, over 200 or so people cant be wrong.
If your going to be doing voice overs on videos or something, yeah get a better microphone. To me the audio quality I hear is more important than my microphone, and your only out $6.00 if you dont like it. If you spend $100 on a shabby headset and the mic sucks or the speakers suck your SOL.
It was my recommendation, you still have the freedom to do as you wish and look at other headphones too.
I did voice over on my Plantronics DSP 500's they had a super awesome microphone, it was like studio quality, but they couldnt hold a candle to my A700's for sound when gaming. So I needed both to do different things. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Ah, I see. Then you can get an AT or Plantronics headset (I like both brands too).
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
The A700's look fantastic... but I would really like a Quality pair of surround sound headphones, there is a certain novelty to it... and more and more games are supporting of surround sound... in fact games like half life 2 are a pain to play without it... I know since I have crappy monitor speakers and cheap Ipod headphones
-
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
No I most definitely need headphones... I'm headed to college and I'll have no room and a roomate... so they have to be relatively sound proof as well
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
What about sennheiser? do they make good headphones?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes sir, yes they do. I love my 595's.

I don't know what to do now lol... the ones vicious recommended look fantastic... but I really wanted surround sound... these are cool but rather expensive and haven't been released yet

As mentioned before, surround sound headphones is a gimmick term. No pair of cans with multiple small drivers can beat a pair with two monolithic audiophile quality drivers.

I happen to believe in surround sound.. becuase of locational sound in games -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Says the person who never tried a good pair of cans nor a pair of "surround sound headphones." I'm just trying to help you get the best sound for the buck. But if you believe that surround sound bollocks, it's your money to spend, MrButterBiscuits.
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Well you have a very very expensive pair of headphones... do they have surround sound? and if not can you hear people via location like behind you, or is it the same as if it were through speakers
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I own a pair of Sennheiser HD595's and have tried several other high quality headphones from bright Grado's to bassy beyerdynamic's. All of them have surround sound that destroys the "surround sound headphones" that you are looking at.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Its been tested before and the sound stage of surround headphones is no better than that of normal 2 speaker headphones.
If I turned on my 3dcmss test file and put my headphones on you, you would be looking around my room like a lune because you would be looking for the chopper flying around
Maybe it does not sound logical that 2 speakers can give the same location data as 7, but if you want to be logical think about this. You only have 2 ear drums
In real life location awareness has to do with the distance and location of the sound, if something is comming from your left and you turn to the left yo change the position of the sound in correspondence to your ear, with headphones if you turn the sound moved with you, also there is not enough distance or time from the headphones to your ear to make a difference.
Simulated surround sounds exactly the same as real surround if its simulated properly and games do simulate ir properly since they use 3d engines. With headphones you can only simulate it, as I just said there is not enough distance/time difference for the speakers or the separation of sound/body to make it real surround.
Then think what I just said, 2 eardrums, all the sound goes to the same place and is heard the same way no matter how many speakers are there.
So the logical conclusion is 2 high quality large drivers with a good frequency responce and tonal curve are going to actually sound and do better than the chepo and heavy 5 or 7 speakers crammed onto a headphone and called "surround headhpones" -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I believe you are actually right about the whole surround sound thing... but then why is their 4 audio jacks in the higher end sound cards? and is sennheiser actually 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound? or is it just the virtual surround like vicious is talking about?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Those jacks are intended for >2.1 speaker setups.
Jesus man. Can someone show MrButterBiscuits the way to headfi? -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I'm sorry! lol I don't know that much about Audio, or display... I have always used mediocre equipment... I'm the kind of person who would buy a "surround sound" headset blindly...
I think I am going to buy the Headset that vicious recommended they look ever bit high quality as the sennheiser for ALOT less -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The A700's are a good pair to start with and are even better for the price they are going for in that link. Later on, you can move up to an open pair.
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
... what is the difference between an "open pair" and what I'm looking at?
-

Genereally better sound stage, and more natural sounding but less bass. Not what you want since you said you want to hide the sound from room mates.
the Open air version of the a700 is the AD700, I had a pair and it was like heaven! the comfort and sound stage beat the A700 quite a bit, but the bass is just gone.
It made you fee like you were in the game or in the music though, rather than have the sound "in your head".
AD700 are on my to get list one day for sure, as the pair I had were sent to me by mistake so I had to send them back -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I just wen't to Headfi... and I think my head exploded... I'm tires and that is too much to process... how about Turtle beach, "sigh" are they good headphone/headsets?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
As ViciousXUSMC said, open air cans have a wider sound stage, tonal neutrality, and less bass. -

MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yea but I don't know about mine... so I'll do closed back.... damn this si a big investment... and Vicious, they do not need external power like and adapter right? and I would get the effect of surround sound?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah when I had the AD700's I found it was more than adequately loud for me wearing them and just a whisper outside, not all open air cans are as loud as others. But in general if outside noise is an issue like he said it would be you stay away from them.
Also while the sound stage is better on open cans usually, for gaming bass is too important to me because of explosions and gun fire. So closed it is.
My remedy when I get the AD700's one day will be a splitter and a in line low frequency crossover. One jack will go to the headphones, while the split line will go to the crossover and to my home theater amp that has my klipsch subs on it, so I will just have the subs going but all the highs on the headphones.
I dont use my A700's often, only when I have too, I use my Klipsch Quintet III's and the Klipsch Synergy 10 -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
As you get into more expensive headphones often times the ohms get higher and then you need a headphone amplifier to adequately power them. This is when your talking BIG money.
The surround sound is going to be on a per game basis, and if this is your desktop the 3dcmss mode for the xfi sound cards is great. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
No this Headset will be for my M17x
These aren't big bucks but they all have an audio amplifiers

Anyway How about we find a good pair from Best Buy so I can just pick them up locally -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Hey guys what about these? So I can just pick them up from my local BB

Those are consumer end stuff, you cant really find a good pair of headphones in a local electronics store. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Gdamnit... so I should get the A700 one's then? BB rip off is a Nono
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Also he has heard Grado's & Beyerdynamic's all of these are popular brands. I wanted to try some Beyerdynamics at some point as I am a bass fanatic.
If you find something you like I can do the deal hunting for you as you can see I am a master at that.
I do not think you will be disappointed with the A700 though, its a good all around headphone, and the headband is nice, the build and quality is good.
Some higher up audio stores have headphones like this out to listen too, I forget the names of said stores off the top of my head (sound advice comes to mind but I do not recall seeing headphones there just home theater) if you know of a store like that in your area, you should make a trip out there and demo some stuff.
If I had the cash to spend I would be personally all over This Those are the AD 700's the open air ones, the sound state is just so nice, and they have a way different fit on your head because of the big/light earmuffs, after 5 minutes you dont even know you are wearing them anymore. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Ok the thing for me is anything is pretty much going to blow my socks off... I have been using crappy headphones for as long as I can remember... I've had good speakers etc. before but never good headphones so I need you guys to decide for me... Best bang for buck as I don't have alot of money to spare after picking up an M17x
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Basically I also want to know what to look for as far as specs on a good headset... becuase I'm going school shopping and my parent's are buying me a good pair of headphones so we'll probably end up going to bestbuy, unfortunately
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Tell them to get you some Sennheiser Orpheus, I think you can find a pair for maybe $28,000.00 or so.
Dont let them take you to Best Buy, tell them they are just pissing there money away. I mean we just prooved that $80.00+Tax for a headphone that you can get online for $35 w/ no tax & free ship. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Hahah you don't know my parent's they work in a very strange way... they wanted me to buy my laptop from BB because they sad they have "good" warranties
I need a Great pair of sound proof Headphones, with a built in Mic! (gaming and video Headphones)
