I had a pair of Altec Lansing speaker (albeit a bit old) that were absolutely great up until a couple of days ago when they stopped working for no reason. They were a 2.1 setup (ie 2 speakers and a subwoofer). They were extremely good speakers that had great range and amazing bass. The only thing that was "bad" about them was they had a low max output volume. I need something that is comparable (in terms of quality and performance) but not terribly expensive (ie not over $100). Suggestions.

The Logitech Z-2300 and Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 are two excellent 2.1 setups that you can find for around $100. I own both, and they're both fantastic. I'd say if you're looking for speakers primarily for music, the Klipsch set would be my first choice. The Z-2300 is excellent if you do a lot of gaming, movies, and stuff like that.

They're both 200W systems (120W sub + two 40W satellites), and they've got more volume than you'll probably ever need. My Z-2300's were a hit at large noisy dorm parties last year at university, if that's any indication. ;)

I am a personal fan of Klipsch (my father has a couple of their lower end [whatever that is for Klipsch] stereo speakers and they are amazing). $150 is a little more than I would like to pay but I will consider them. Thanks for the advice.

If you hunt around for a while, you can occasionally find them on sale new at some stores for around $110-120, and you can find them used for $80 or lower. My friend picked up his like-new pair of Kilpsch ProMedias for $60 on Craigslist.

Why dont you stay with Altec? They do some really good speakers!
However I agree that klipsch cant be a bad choice!

Seconded. For the price they are both extremely good speaker sets, depending on what you use them for. I bought the Z-2300 primarily because I game, and they are excellent. The subwoofer has enough power to shake my room, and I can feel the vibrations from the other end of the house.

I haven't had personal experience with the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1, but from the recommendations I have seen here on this board, I would recommend them myself. From what I understand, they have less bass, but it is slightly less "boomy", so it would then be better for music.

If your interested in the Logitech Z2300's right now the cheapest you can get them "new" is at BHPhoto for $130. Usually, you can get them for around $100+ as others have said. Here is the Linky, if you are interested.

Sometimes, Logitech has them on sale as part of their "dented box" deal for less then $100. LINKY. It was just priced at $100 earlier this week, but sold out w/in about 20 minutes. Dented box is just the outside box is torn, scratched or dented..but the product itself is in 100% condition! ;)

I don't know how you feel about "refurbs" but...Overstock.com has the Klipsch Pro Medias for $95.49. LINKY

If you're comfortable with used/refurbished units, you can get a Z-2300 set for pretty much $100 even ($85 Buy It Now plus $15 shipping) here on eBay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Logitech-Z-2300...ViewItemQQptZPCA_Speakers?hash=item45f0a48d81

In my experience, used/refurb audio stuff is just fine, and if for some reason anything is wrong with it, it's backed by a 30-day warranty from the seller. The seller's eBay feedback seems pretty good as well.

Here's another entry for a "used, excellent condition" Z-2300 set, with three days left for bidding, with free shipping:

well im gonna be bias, but yea...i love the Klipsch speakers. they are awesome for music, never heard something so good (moving from some crappy dells that came with my desktop 5 years ago ;))

right now, i want to sell em (i bought it from best buy for 125USD + tax) for the wireless edition of em....but ehh...not worth selling for 80bucks and spending 120USD more just for wireless feature :)

Yes, the are a good company. I've got a DVD player and a receiver by them. In addition, they make one of the finest plasma screens around and one of the worlds best speaker systems. Therefore, it goes without saying, they can also be very expensive.

since most of the usual suspects are already named. i'd like to throw out the swan entry-level 2.1 multimedia system. they're in the same price range, around $100, as the mentioned logitech and klipse systems. i've heard nothing but great things about them. i've have the z-4 system myself. i picked it up from ebay for only for $40 bucks shipped. the swans might not be as boomy as the logitech systems, but they focus on music and sound clarity.

off topic: i just received a pair of head direct RE2's. now, i'm a complete noob when it comes to ear bud-type of headphones. i randomly stumbled upon a thread about these on slickdeals. after readin the rave reviews, i decided to check them out since the cheap earpollutionz i recently ordered just suck.

i plugged them into my laptop and turned on a bassy song since alot of reviews stated that these had very little bass. well i started off at a very low level and was like, "hey they already sound a little nicer then the crappy earpollutionz." then as soon as i turned the volume up just a tad more. these IEM's really came alive. i had to really stop myself and listen carefully to some of the songs. it was like listening to a new song. there were so many instruments that really came alive, and some that i didn't even know were there. they're supposed to get better after some break in, but so far i am fairly impressed. i've only had 3 pairs of ear bud-type headphones. my first were the IEM's that came with my XPS m1530. the 2nd were some cheap custom ear bud earpollutionz (they sucked!) that i got on sale for $7. these head direct RE2's easily blow both of the others out of the water. it has very nice build quality, design, sound quality, and are a great bang for the buck. the dell IEM's sounded pretty good, but they were a little heavy on the bass side. i feel that the RE2's have just enough bass and the highs and mids are alot better defined. this is comin from a hip hop/rap fan. geez...sorry about the lengthy post. i didn't even realize i wrote so much. i guess that shows how satisfied i am with these IEM's. i'm wearin them as i'm typin this. :D
