I bought the Sennheiser PC 350 in 2008 and it still working since purchase. Now my sister use it, because I bought a pair of sennheiser PC 360!
Very good build quality and the sound is just awesome. My friends hear me very clear on skype with the PC 360. You can get them for $200-$250 on ebay. -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Here is a post I made in another thread. I have had the HPA2's since early 2010 and never had any problems. Durable headset made out of strong aluminum(I think) and plastic. I have dropped them several times, still work. If you have them on and get up and forget to take them off the quick disconnect plug will keep everything from sliding off the table.

beyerdynamic MMX 300 - Premium Gaming-Headset
Or if you want to pimp it out (there's virtually no price difference these days, so why the heck not?):
beyerdynamic MMX 300 MANUFAKTUR - Customize your gaming-headset
A ~$200-~$250 class sound, closed & isolated so you 'get in the game', allied to one of the best consumer-grade mics I've had on a reasonably priced headset. A Zalman this is definitely not - and it is way better than the mics on the Sennheiser PC350 and the Logitech G35 as an example. Sure, it's possibly not the best value especially if you're willing to kludge something crappy up, but this is one of the best packages out there. 5-year warranty as well.
It also depends on how far you want to go with it - in terms of headphone quality, mic pickup, etc.
e.g. Technically this plus this plus this plus this plus this = ultimately "a USB headset". A $2,000 "headset" sure, but still.
A higher-end version of this sort of setup is what I sit in front of these days, though the G35 (and to a lesser extent the MMX 300 as I don't really have a good surround card to plug it into right now - and the Essence STX does not count as good IMO) comes out for hardcore gaming. -

I was also going to say the MMX300 comes to mind when I think quality headset.
Steel Series & Astro Gaming both make some higher up gaming headsets.
like the 5HV2 or A40
I wouldnt think either to be up to quality of the MMX300, Astro is popular due to being endorsed by many esports events and also they have there mixamp that is quite nifty given the proper situation.
I assume Steel Series to be more or less around the level that Logitech is with the G35 and G930 and I was personally not very pleased with my G930's.
I think Astro stuff is supposed to be good quality but probably overpriced for what you get since its very "egaming" based much like Razer they probably inflate the price of the product simply because it has there name on it. -
beats ftw!

G35 may not be the best headset ever, but I've owned it for over two years, still works and my friends who've tried it now own one. I'm not an audiophile, but to me it sounds pretty good playing games and listening to music. There are a couple issues with it for me: where my glasses rub on the padded cups the material covering the padding is worn, and rarely my headset is not detected which requires a restart.
I've tried the Medusa 5.1 headset, but that didn't work right from the get-go, same with my Turtle Beach 5.1 experience. Maybe it was my inexperience with the technology, but it's doubtful, I contacted tech support in each case and they were unable to resolve the issue. This is only my experience. I have tried working Medusa/Turtle Beach 5.1 headsets, and they are quite good. -
The Medusas had quite a noisy amp - at least the ones I had. It's also heavy to wear, the 5.1 effect is disjointed and left/right cues are no better than stereo (though overall it works better than a standard stereo headphone for gaming) and the sound quality isn't red hot. The G35 is a far better proposition IMO if you just want a reasonably priced do-it-all with a gaming-heavy focus.

The only headset i have owned that have survived more than 3 years is my Icemate Siberia with the clip on mic.
I gave them to by little brother once i bought a Steelseries Siberia v2, mainly because it had a retractable mic and the same design as the old headset.
And its so comfy to wear for longer gaming sessions.
But then it broke so my Siberia v2 is RMA for a replacement.
When my wallet allows it im gonna get either the BeyerDynamics MMX300 or the rebranded QPAD QH-1339.
Whatever end up cheaper.
I want a headset, and this time a good quality one!
