Ok guys,
I am now in the market for a new gaming mouse, and have narrowed it down to a couple of Logitechs.
![]()
Logitech MX518 - about $38-40
Pros:
- feels good
- tracking is good (1600 DPI)
- has 2 side buttons
Cons:
- looks like its been dented (stupid Logitech graphic designer)

Logitech G5 - about $43-45
Pros:
- feels good
- awesome tracking (2000 DPI)
- weighted (not a big deal)
Cons:
- one side button
- looks like rusted metal on the back (another stupid Logitech graphic designer)

The one that I want but cannot find (for purchase) is:
Logitech MX518 rebranding (Asus customized for their gaming notebooks)

( view full image)
This mouse currently comes with some of Asus gaming notebooks, such as the Asus G1.
As you can see, the mouse looks great, no stupid looking dents for the graphics. And is a great mouse for all purposes.
I was going to really get a Logitech G7, then I did some testing, and found that its great when its working, but has minor lags on the desktop sometimes, while when I tested a corded Logitech G5 and my friend's MX510, its seemed much more smooth.
So I need a new mouse, my current one is getting warned out and has been getting more click-sensitive than I would like.
If ProPortable or MilestonePC knows if its possible, please tell me, that re-branded Logitech MX518 is perfect in appearance and usage.
What do you guys think I should get if I am not able to get the Asus mouse?

P.S. A few hours ago, it was still my B-Day (of anyone saw it on the bottom of the NBR forum main page), so my friend saw my crapped-out gaming mouse and said "Dude, get a new mouse... heck, I would pay for it.. Geez." So I need to find a good one, and my friend will flip the bill...![]()

UPDATE: One more mouse just made it into the gaming hall of fame, and another good choice for me.
Razer DeathAdder - $59.99
Pros:
- ergonomic design (unlike most Razers)
- 2 side buttons
- great tracking w/ 3rd generation optical (1800 DPI)
- Color is a neutral black
Cons:
- price compared to Logitech G5
- 5-buttons only, some gamers might want more (i dont care for more)
Extremetech, as well as many other reviewers have put it at a tie with the Logitech G5 as the best gaming mouse.
Review for Razer DeathAdder -
Have you seen the benchmarks at http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679 ?? They seem to suggest that along with the mx518 the diamondback is also an excellent gaming mouse, better than razer's laser mice. I haven't seen any numbers on the deathadder yet, so I won't get it until I know whether or not it suffers from the same problems as the laser sensor in the copperhead.
-
I'd go with the G7 is price isn't a factor. I was worried about lag as well, but I have noticed none in the time I've had it, and it's worked perfectly. It's the best mouse that I've ever used. The looks are unbeatable, and the convenience of a wireless mouse is awesome. The rechargeable batteries allow you to always have power, as you can switch them out in seconds. The laser engine gives the quickest responding mouse around.
-
I am not sure if it's a big deal to have 2000 DPI vs 1600 DPI, so an optical mouse like MX518 would have been good enough.
Another thing to consider is the features on each mouse's software. I notice Razer's software doesn't have profile management for button assignments... it's rather annoying I have to re-assign the buttons when I launch different programs (or maybe I am just too dumb to figure out how). Logitech's SetPoint has profiles.
Note: I played around with my friends' Razers and Logitechs. I still use an MS Intellimouse on my setup. -
Me too, my old Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 is crapping out after 4 years... whats up with that?!?
I have several mice, but chose MS mouse because I killed 2 basic Logitechs and gave a Razer away for a good price since it did not meet my ergonomic needs... so went back to my MS Intellimouse Explorer... until now when its starting to crap out (too click sensitive).
The Razer DeathAdder looks really sleek and has been shown to be the a tie of best gaming mouse on the market with the Logitech G5.

About the deathadder, is anyone worried that the dpi can't be changed on-the-fly? From what I've seen you have to use a button on the bottom of the mouse, making it unrealistic to change settings in-game.

On the fly DPI changing is overrated IMO. I've had it on my last three mice, and the only time I ever use it is when I'm using Photoshop and I need to get more precise with the eraser tool, and in that case you could just go into the software and change it easily. I don't use it for games, it's just too hard to get used to for me.
-
I less than three my MX-1000. The only con is that I have to plug it into the wall - but hey, I don't have to keep buying new batteries for it. Colon Three.
-
I think I'd probably go with the Logitech G5. Now days you can get mouse gestures for windows even so you don't have to have your forward and back buttons. I also like the cord that it is equipt with.. seems that it would last long. The mouse is pretty comfortable too.
-
Yeah, it seems most people consider the G5 one of the very best corded gaming mice out there. The only thing to consider is that it won't necessarily work well if you play with low to very low sensitivities.
-
I have the G5 and probably my best investment, as well as my G11 keyboard and my 20" WS LCD haha, not to mention the V6va itself!
The colours is really wrong in pictures, see if you can look at a floor model, as its pretty cool looking. -
I owned a G5, but I gave it away to my dad. I don't even know why he needs a mouse like that, but it was a good mouse, and I just gave it to him. I liked it, but I didn't want a corded mouse because I just have way too many chords lying around in my room. For the price it's a sweet deal. Look around for cheaper places, and if you haven't used Google Checkout, you might be able to get $10 off of your first purchase (participating stores only, though)
-
Too bad you're not near me else I'd sell you my brand new Asus branded Logitec. I've used a trackball for the past 7 years and this moving around using the whole hand doesn't do it for me.
-
If not, then its fine, I might just get the regular MX518 with the dents. I was considering the DeathAdder, but it seems that its been sold out on Newegg and other online stores. -
Ill go halvsies on a g1 with you if you just want the mouse ....
-
UPDATE: not serious about the "halvies", but serious about wanting the mouse -
Are you serious? That's pretty funny. I'll pm you.
-
-
UPDATE: Thx to obsolete, I just received his Asus MX518 (that came along with his Asus G1 Notebook), its looks and feels great.
Here are some quick pics from my Treo:
As you can see, it fits very well with my Clevo D900K.
(and the "Bloom" effect for my phone-cam makes it look more interesting, LOL)

P.S. Postal Carrier knocked on my door when I was going to leave, sweet... now i gotta get something to eat.
-
It was mutually beneficial. Thanks Gophn.
-
yeah mx518 is a great mouse
got mine a month ago and i have to admit, my FPS has gone up a notch.
the on the fly sensitivity is good when you have to snipe someone quickly in Call of duty or you want to get to that nearest unit in a hurry a RTS game.
I want the Asus Optical Mouse (re-branded Logtech MX518)
