I hate the touch pad but most of the time I use my laptop I'm sitting in a van, so no flat surfaces for a mouse. Can anyone recommend a portable (smallish) solution?

Trackball?
I LOVE my trackball, works great on a desktop, on my leg, on any surface large enough to balance it on. -
I love my trackball at work. Thought about one for the NB, but even the smallest one was too large, but you can take a look at them here:

A couple of them are cordless and sounds like they'd work great for you. -
Smallest is too large? In what regard, do you mean for placing in bag or something else?
Just curious... -
Those trackballs do look pretty good. I just wish they would make a smaller version.

For me, they seemed too big to haul around. And I thought the ball might fall out and get lost cause those kind of weird things happen to me.
But then when traveling with my NB, I tend to just use the touchpad. Or used to. On the Asus, it's so sensitive that I need to disable it to type. The MX610 that I got is probably just as large as a trackball. -
Attach a wiimote to your pc
Use it as a mouse.
Yes, it can be done. -
There are smaller trackballs out there, but I don't know how good they are. I remember seeing one I really liked a few years ago--I think it was Kensington.
Here's one:

Along with the wiimote idea, this might work well for working on a NB in a van or other small area:

I think MS makes trackball/presentation device too. -
Check out the mouse I reviewed a while back. I have a link to it in my signature. I love that little mouse.

Is there a website or something that'll teach you how to hook up the Wiimote to the PC? And I think there was a mouse Logitech a while back that functioned the same way; basically waving in air to move the cursor.

Results so far have been poor for using the Wii as a remote:
