If not, and I do want touch gestures like zoom and pan, then is there any reason for me to get windows 7 or should I only get windows 8 with start8?

In general I hope that I could have my cake and eat it too and get the best of 7 and 8. Start 8 is alright. I just wish charms and the metro view were just gone period or windows would snap to their senses and just make apps displayed in a grid like everyone else.

you sure will as long as you have the USB cable and driver to go with the touch screen. I am currently attached to a Viewsonic TD2420 using its touch functions in windows 7 to sort out a bunch of photos easily. ( X230 as a laptop )

Touch screens have been supported since windows 98 you know, digitizers too ;)
