Should I get a 5.1 (or 7.1) soundcard to watch blueray movies from my laptop connected to a TV via HDMI cable?

Or are the channels rendered through my TV and home theater setup?

If you are getting the soundcard just for the increased channels, don't waste your money. The nice thing about HDMI is that it will take the audio to the TV and allow the TV or home theater to render it. If you want the sound card for better sounding audio, go for it.

There is a plugin known as 'Matrix decoder' which decodes 5.1 sound as Stereo for headphones.

its a free plugin which can be downloaded for different players.

some Laptop inbuilt soundcards like Conexant have Matrix decoder support in their Driver also.

    try googling around.

what player will u be using?
