For my birthday, my father gave me his old Dell Inspiron 1501. I already have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC38. Basically, Im looking for a way to upload footage from my handycam to my new laptop.

After looking on youtube, all I could really find was that I needed to have a FireWire cable in order to do this. After reasearching the matter deeper, I realized that my laptop might not have a firewire port.

Does my Dell Inspiron 1501 have this port?

Is there some kind of firewire reader that would allow me to upload from my handycam to my laptop?

Is there any other way to upload from a handycam to my laptop?

As you can probably tell, Im not to the least bit computer smart so I would greatly appreciate a response with detail about where I could get a device like described above.

    Thank you all very much...TSullyJ

You will need one of these...

I have a 1501, no Firewire ports, sorry. But a card such as above should do the trick. Or possibly transfer the video with another computer and ferry the files over with an external hard drive or something.

The card above looks like it has the correct imports but I dont have a slot where I can insert the card into my laptop. Is there some sort of adapter for it to work with my laptop?

About having the external hard drive, If i was to purchase one of these devices, how would this work with my camera to help it load the footage onto windows movie maker for vista because I still need some sort of firewire cable to connect my camera to the laptop...

Im basically looking for the cheapest way possible.

Exactly what do I need to do this without selling my camera?

    With Thanks...TSullyJ

With an external hard drive you can use another computer to do the download that does have firewire ports, transfer the footage to a USB connected external HD, then move the HD over to your 1501.

Not all Dell computers have PCMCIA ports, a fact that was a bit of a shock to me as well since they have been standard since 99.
