I'm going to college in a couple of weeks and I need a good laptop lock. I've been looking around and I've seen some that are described as, like, aircraft-grade, kevlar-coated aluminum, and others that appear to be the equivalent of the wire stuff that they use to keep childrens' toys in the box (a pain in the ass if you're quickly trying to grab the toy, but very easy to cut with a scissor), and everything in between. In short, I have no clue what to look for in a laptop lock, other than a combo lock would be preferable to a key lock (kind defeats the point of a lock if someone gets into my room while the key and the laptop are both in there, and I'm not sleeping with my key under my pillow or some ish like that :p). Any advice?

I know that targus makes a variety of notebook locks, but I have not used them , nor do I know much about them. So it's a start, but just make sure your notebook comes with a lock slot. I think most do but then again, who knows.

Yeah mine definitely has one. It's a MBP, and I think on the box or in the manual or something it specifically points out where the lock slot is.

Here's a review of a Kensington lock that I did a month or two ago. They have a combo lock that looks very similar from the pictures. Another Kensington lock actually guarantees that no one will cut through the cord, and if they do, they give you like $1000 - but that one uses a key.

All that it has to really do is look intimidating. Because if someone is determined to steal your laptop, they will, and a lock will not stop them. The cord may be difficult to cut, but not impossible. And if you attached it to a wooden table, well, the costs of a small saw are rather small. But you know what? Even if you don't have a lock, chances are, your MBP will not get stolen. Not saying you shouldn't get a lock, quite to the contrary, you should, just don't stress it too much.
