Well the mic in my old Logitech cheapies decided to stop working for me awhile ago and I've always wanted to replace them as they were never that comfortable for me. The pair I had to run out and get that night does not play nice with my M17x-R2 like it did with my R1 for some reason and gives me the sound/mic cutout issue where I have to unplug/replug the usb cord and restart/reset the program or settings. Because of this I decided what better time to buy a good gaming headset but I'm torn between several models and from what I am reading on reviews they are all great with only slight drawbacks to each. So I am looking for some input from those here who own these models.

    • MUST be comfortable to wear for extended periods of time since I am on the pc through my day for college and gaming. And the gaming sessions can hit 4 hours in length depending on what I'm playing.

    • Sound quality needs to be really good and not lacking in areas. I know people will say to get my hands on some pure headphones and use a separate mic but I would prefer a headset.

    • The mic quality needs to be well enough that people will hear me clearly on vent. This is all I will be using it for but I can't stand when someone else has a crappy mic so I won't settle for it either. It also needs to not pickup background noise too much. I like to let my speakers play music and use the headset for game sounds and vent.

    • Must not have the sound/mic cut out issue I have read about happening with many headsets on Win7 x64. I know the Megalodon did this when it first came out but a firmware has since fixed that, no clue if the other two do this.

First up is the Razer Megalodon.
I've read that it has great sound quality and the 7.1 works really well, the mic also sounds great. I'm really considering these as they have the 7.1 and I've had nothing but great luck with Razer products, the only thing I'm not so fond of is the control box since with an M17x, Razer mouse pad, and some old school Creative speakers desk space is precious.

Next up is the SteelSeries Siberia V2.
These ones have also received great reviews from what I have seen and have been praised for their sound/mic quality as well. Only thing is I would prefer a USB set so I could leave my speakers on my system playing music while game/vent is through the headset. I know they have a version that comes with a USB 7.1 soundcard as well, so any feedback on that would be great since I've not found much that include that in the review.

Lastly is the Sound Blaster WoW Headset.
Yup, I know that link is the wireless one but they are the same between wired/wireless basically. I would be going wired probably so its one less thing I need to charge every night (Mamba mouse is enough thanks). Anyways, I've heard the sound quality of these is good and the THX can really bring details out when playing. One thing that does bother me though is I have heard the mic is pretty crappy and picks up background noise like nothing else. I know there is a firmware update claiming to fix this, did it?

I've read many other posts on here asking between maybe 1 or 2 of these and a few others, or doing reviews on them but I'd like just some feedback from those who own these models and what you think of them in the areas I listed. Anything else you want to mention is great as I am hoping to make these last for quite some time.

    Thanks

I vouch for the Megalodon being excellent, in terms of both headphone and microphone quality.

In general, I like to buy audio products from companies that specialize in audio equipment, rather than companies that sell "gamer" products. I find the audio quality, build quality, and price to be much better than "gamer" products.

So, if I were in your shoes, I'd buy:
    - Full-sized circumaural headphones: Sennheiser PC350. $150 shipped.
    - In-ear monitor (IEM) headphones - they are also noise-isolating, which blocks external sound so you are in your own little world with these on - Edge Acoustics GX400 by Etymotic. $180 shipped.

I don't buy into the idea "surround headphones". If you'd like, I can go into why. But I find that it never works well on headphones, and you make too many sacrifices to get there. There are other ways to get surround effects, without buying "surround headphones".

Are the Razer's really that great, worth the $150 bucks? I'd like to have some feedback on them from actual users rather then just "they're great!". I've read plenty of reviews but would like to hear fomr people who use them on a regular basis rather then just get them, review them, and then either toss them aside or keep using them never to update their review.

I ended up going with the Megalodons and boy am I glad I did. I got them for 80 bucks off ebay (100 including shipping), practically brand new. Came with everything a new set would have including both stickers. lol

The sound quality is great and they sure are comfy. The 7.1 actually works fairly well, very impressed. They have me thinking about buying the new Orca headphones they are bringing out just to use with my zune, psp, and whatnot. Though I'm not fond of them being green...
