I've never flown out of the U.S. before, let alone with a laptop, so forgive my dumb questions. I'm taking a trip to Australia, which uses 240 volt/50hz can I use my HP9700t with just an adapter, or should I also use a step-down voltage converter? If I do just need an adapter, I just need to have the plugs in this order, right - notebook to surge protector to adapter to wall?
I'm also confused about the current rules about extra laptop batteries - are we allowed to bring an extra battery in carry-on luggage or not? I'm looking at a 17 hour flight each way, not to mention a couple of train trips within Australia almost as long, with about 3 hours of use on one battery, so I was hoping I could at least bring one extra battery along on my trip. Alternatively, has anyone flown on Quantas recently - do they have plugs available on economy seats that I could use an air/auto adapter plug to power my laptop during the flight or do only first-class get them?

Moved to accessories.
Have a read of Johnny_T's traveling guide in this section. There was a link in there for overseas adapters and such -

Check the label on your PSU. It should say something like 100 - 240V, 50/60Hz, in which case it will have no problem with the voltage. All you need is an adaptor for the mains plug.
I recently travelled (not with Qantas and not out of the US) with a spare computer battery in my hand baggage and no one questioned it.
It looks as if the Quantas economy class doesn't have power sockets. Few airlines provide this facility in economy.
However, it will be extreme optimism to assume that you would have room in economy class to even open your 9700t - it is a struggle to fi anything bigger than 13.3" onto the tray table and, if the person in front reclines their seat, then the display will be half closed. You will just have to hope that the in-flight entertainment is good.

Look on the menu on the left, if you know which type of plane you are on, click on the model number and it will provide you will a full seating plan with all the positions of the power outlets.
The only model (Quantas) I see with power outlet in economy class is the Airbus A380 (the really big plane).

Most power adapters today do 110-240, 50/60Hz. What you will need though, depending where you are going is a kit of AC connectors adapters.
