Just wanted to let people know of a 12V DC to AC inverter that I can confirm firsthand powers AND charges off the auto cigarette lighter a Gateway P-6831FX laptop.
I had trouble with a relatively cheap modified sine wave Jensen 300W inverter. It would only charge the battery with the laptop off and would not charge it AND run the laptop. That was the case with the inverter plugged in to either the cigarette lighter or even when wired directly off the battery on my 2006 F-150 pickup with a big V-8 and its very large battery.
I got an AIMS 300W PURE sine wave inverter (part # PWRI30012S) and it fully powers the laptop AND charges the battery off of the cigarette lighter outlet. Paid $129 + $15 3-day shipping from an online vendor.
For those not familiar with inverters, be very wary of MODIFIED sine wave inverters - even those with high power ratings - on the bigger, power hungry laptops like my Gateway. A decent PURE sine inverter is the way to go. Google the terms " modified sine wave inverter" and " PURE sine wave inverter" to learn more. Pure sine inverters are more expensive but produce MUCH cleaner and more stable power than the cheapie modified sine wave inverters.
My Gateway also draws a bit more juice than stock because I upgraded the CPU from the stock 1.6Ghz core 2 duo CPU to a 2.2 Ghz T7500 CPU. Even so the AIMS inverter handles it like a champ.
