Hi,
I am thinking of buying this used monitor (Samsung LS27A850TS, 27" 850 Series LED Monitor | Samsung S27A850T).
I want to connect it via my laptop which only has an HDMI 1.4 out (no DVI-D). Apparently, the screen has "hdmi and dp and dvi".
Will 2560x1440 display on the monitor correctly at the maximum HZ via an HDMI 1.4 cable?
If not, I have a DVI-D to HDMI cable (as suggested here)- how can I know if I have a built in scaller?

Short answer: Yes.
The maximum resolution supported by HDMI 1.4 is 4096×2160 at 24 Hz.
You haven't stated the refresh rate you want to achieve. -
I guess the maximum refresh rate.
It will be used mainly for work (photoshop/editing/website design) and movies/videos.
Will rarely be used for gaming (tho I'm doubting it's possible with my 860m GPU).
Could I achieve 60Hz @ 2560x1440? -

I just read the manual of the Samsung monitor, and on page 33 (section 2.2.1) it says "In HDMI mode, the maximum resolution is (1920 x 1080)."
Oh no.
Will I just have to *hope* that HDMI to DVI using this method will work? Similar to him, will I be limited by HZ? -
If that's what the monitor specification says, then yes, you will need to use the DP or DVI port.
If that is what your notebook states the maximum resolution it will support, you won't be able to go higher than 1920x1080 with any external monitor connected to it. -
... The latter being the cheaper option..

Monitors with resolution above 1080p are not capable to produce native resolution with HDMI, 99.9%. This is why I stuck with 1080p. DVI and Displayport is the way to drive those 1440p or 1600p screens.

Yup, allthough the new hdmi 2.0 ports will support 60 hz for 4k

And the desktop 980/970 has it, great...
Is 2560x1440 via HDMI possible?
