    Hi everyone,

Looking at purchasing my new notebook soon and I'm also planning on buying some accessories for it - and was thinking about picking up a Kensington lock. I don't do a whole lot of travelling, and when using my computer in public places I *NEVER* leave it unattended - would it be worth the $50 to get a lock to be on the safe side, or invest that money on something else?

    Thanks!

You do sleep at some point, don't you? If so, it's worth it. :p

In all seriousness, though, a good Kensington lock will cost you around $10 to protect a multiple-hundred-dollar investment.

    woofer00 - send em to me :)

to OP - they're worth it for the quick thing. Obv never leave the laptop unattended, but if you have a lock and others don't, thieves would target those first.

Funny. I wondered the same thing the other day.

It would only make sense to me to use something like this at school, when I would be in the library and had to get up and go use the restroom. Having to pack everything up is a pain.

But it seems to be that the consensus is to still not leave the laptop unattended? Defeats the purpose, at least for what I would use it for!

It's a deterrent, not foolproof protection. If I take my laptop to the library and somebody manages to cut my lock cable while I'm away for 2 minutes without anybody noticing, hell, they deserve it.

Was messing around last night with one that had a solid-looking cable and a broken lock (the locking tab snapped when I yanked it out of a netbook :( The netbook was undamaged  ). I sliced the plastic sheath, bent it into a really tight loop, and managed to snip/snap the main cable. Mangled the wire cutter a bit, but the trade off would be worth it.
