The XBOX external HD-DVD drive has a USB cable. Can't be that easy.

Yup. You need drivers for XP, Vista has them built in I think.

    Impressive idea that.

But would a laptop display in the correct resolution and be Hi-Def?? Progressive Scan on a laptop screen?!?

It will work. One thing to note is that the smaller resolution you intend on using for watching HD video, the more the GPU will have to work when resizing the image. This is just from my personal experience.

WSXGA+ (1680x1050) is pretty close to 1080i. WXGA and higher could handle 720p without resizing if you want it to.

I'm just curios as to what player or program will be required to show the movies. HD DVD is definitely on my upgrade list.

I have an Xbox 360 anyway but still interested in this.
Although when I get my HDTV in about a month I will probably get the HD-DVD player then and play it through the 360 on my TV.

Yes, You can hook up the xbox hd-dvd drive externally to the laptop the same as the pc. Theres no difference. It's only connected by via usb port. I needed to use powerdvd 6.5 HD to get it to work. U can also hook your laptop to a secondary display and display it like that. On a 1.6 ghz c2d, it plays almost smooth. Maybe a fresh format would make it play completely smooth.

Could you use a codec pack (like K-Lite) that could do this?

I heard about connecting up the XBOX HDDVD player to other devices on CNET. I don't know how to do it (and I don't own any consoles either) so I am of no help here...but if you did a bit of research on it, I think it could work.

I know this is an old thread, but does the 360 drive actually give you 1080p resolution if you have the wuxga? I was told it wouldn't until the hdcp compliant mobos come out later this month... I want to buy a new notebook but don't want to buy one now if I wouldn't get 1080p resolution on my notebook screen...

    any help?
