I'm just asking, because I don't want to hurt any stuff I have. I think it will be okay, and my experience kind of indicates it would be fine, but I'm not 100% sure.

I have one external DVD drive, and three external hard drives. Would it be safe to stack all three drives on top of my external optical drive? What about the hard drives...they shouldn't interfere with each other right? Would two 3.5" and one 2.5" drive be too much weight on the drive?

I'm asking because I want to put all that stuff in one spot on my desk, save some space, and not hear them most of the time. I try to put my noisy stuff (aka my optical drive) to the right of me cause I cannot really hear anything in that direction...

Is your concern about heat build-up or the dead weight? I wouldn't worry about the heat.

If the ODD is in a metal case I wouldn't be worried, particularly if whatever you put directly on top of it has some small feet near the edge so the weight will fall close to the sides. In fact, if these feet are present (and if not, make some since rubber feet will isolate any vibrations) then even a plastic casing should withstand the load.

I don't think the hard drives will interfere with each other, as hard drives can be placed next to each other in desktops without interference issues. Unless your DVD drive is poorly built, I think your biggest problem may be heat from the disks stacked together. It's kinda hard to tell without actually seeing the drive/disk.. :p

Mostly the weight on the DVD drive. It is a metal case though...specs are here.

The hard drives do have little feet on them, but only so that they could be stacked in wanted (so I guess interference isn't really possible I guess...).

I kind of forgot about desktop drives being so close together, so I guess that I wouldn't have a problem. Here are links to the drive enclosures I'm talking about...

Your DVD drive and hard drives will probably be fine, since the enclosures are metal. I'd say go for it. But I would pay attention to the heat of the drive stack in the beginning, just in case it gets really hot. It's better to be safe than sorry. :)

Thanks for the tip. I'll be working on re-doing all the corded mess, and I'll give it a shot.
