The printer works great with my old MSI 1013 when it boots into XP, but it routinely gives my father's Dell E6400 hell. I don't know anything about how printers work, but my father keeps saying it gives messages about the spooler not working, and after a quick Google it looks like this is not an uncommon problem.
Would replacing it be a good idea, and if so, what are some good candidates? 95% of what he prints are black and white documents, and he prints a lot, so speed and longevity are the main criteria. It does need to have fairly good image quality, though, as the occasional document does included a fairly detailed color picture. The ability to fax and make copies would also be a plus, but is not necessary. I wouldn't want to pay more than $150, but if it's justifiable I could. In light of the troubles with the current printer, what manufacturers tend to have the best driver support?

spooling is more on software and not hardware
you only replace a laser printer IF IT NEEDS to replace a photoconductor kit or motherboard; unless, specs wise, you need a faster printer
i suggest he uninstall the printer and reinstall the driver correctly
spooling is just printer driver / installation conflicts. or even a printer reset would do the trick -

What OS does your father use with the 1022? I have a LaserJet 1012 and it works great in Xp and terrible in Vista since HP have not released any official drivers for it.

XP. It makes no sense that XP is the problem, since my laptop with XP works fine with it. My only guess is that it's finicky about the computer itself, which makes no sense to me, but I'm not sure what to think at this point.
Issues with HP Laserjet 1022 - time to replace it? Suggestions for a replacement?
