So I'm after a compact shoulder-slung messenger. Nothing that looks too... happy in its manbagness, but nevertheless something that isn't capable of swallowing an oversized 15-incher.

Also given the fact that I'll be de facto un(der)employed soon, I'm not going to explore the boundaries of pricing sanity regarding this one. So let's say sub-$500 as a definite requirement. Must be available in EU.

As I said, more compact dimensions are desired than your average 15"-accomodating bag. There must be a laptop compartment, and it must be usefully padded. Minimum laptop compartment size needed = 13.5" x 10" x 1.5", but the less over that the better.

Stylewise, I wear suits - or jackets + casual trousers - quite often. Not a jeans guy. Not a sneakers guy. Sometimes a boot guy. Not a hipster. Possibly a Metro-in-denial.

I hate bags that have that sort of cloth twill backing, because on a shoulder-slung bag that regularly rubs against your waist it exerts huge amounts of additional wear on trousers. It has to be vinyl, very smooth artificial fibre or leather in that area for sure.

    Thanks

I've actually found that Ross sometimes has decent bags, if you're looking for something new and not used. Check local discount stores, not sure what's in your area (stuff like Gordman's, even Sears or K-Mart). I got a pretty nice Ogio bag for something like $25.

Otherwise check out maybe buy.com or overstock.com, see if they have anything attractive to you.

    I'd be looking for a more messenger-ish bag than a briefcase-ish bag.

    *MUST* have laptop compartment.

    Heck, right here:

Gives you an idea of models available.

Personally, the requirement ""*MUST* have laptop compartment." eliminates the majority of messenger bags in the market, especially bags using quality leather. Why not just get a quality laptop sleeve and place it in there?

Cuz I've never been a sleeve guy, and have always avoided it whenever possible.

Maybe a sleeve that's one size bigger than your laptop?

I guess I could adapt a larger sleeve, but I don't really want to compromise.

EDIT: I've made my choices, have/will order a few I've shortlisted and send back the ones I don't like. Thanks, if anyone has other suggestions that actually meets the requirements above I'd appreciate still knowing about it.

If you want something simple and practical:

Belkin Messenger bag for notebooks up to 15.4'' F8N050

Ive used it for the last 2 years for my 14". Its very well padded on all sides and comes with a mini bag for the laptop power supply. The black/red one suits my suits well ;)

Its probably the only good thing Belkin makes :p
