I've been pretty happy with the sorta-kidney-shaped Dell XPS mousepads for a long time (3+ years?). I mowed my way through at least one of every generation of the XPS 700 / H2C-series desktops, so I had a decent stockpile of these pads.
These days though I'm down to two unused ones, so I figured I might as well start looking for alternatives down the line.
Now until I got the Dell pads, it was pretty much those rubber-backed cloth things for me, and the XPS article was an eye-opener... so you could say I'm probably in the low expectations camp when it comes to 'pro gaming' mousepads.
What should I be looking for in a top of the line pad?

Razer Exactmat gets decent reviews.

I enjoy the Steel Series. Sticks to my desk like glue, and it's smooth as silk.
-
I used to own a Func Pad F-Series. They are really nice pads, using a plastic finish. There two surface types, I had the smooth one. There are a few other Series. I really enjoyed mine, and you can customize the design of most pads.

Right now I use a Razer Goliathus Speed Edition. It's a cloth surface, which tracks and feels great.
http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mousing-surfaces/razer-goliathus-speed-edition/
Of the two, I think I prefer the Razer for the cloth surface... but both are really great pads. -
Steelseries, QCK is the one I use with my Razor deathadder, works very well!
-
I love my Razer eXactMat. It's got two sides, one ultra-slick for speed (my preference, lets my DeathAdder take advantage of being the fastest gaming mouse in the world
), and one more roughly textured for control (good for precise work in Photoshoop and such). You can also get it with a removable memory foam wrist rest (the eXactRest).
-
Mastershroom has been the most helpful so far in terms of *what to look for*, not what pad to look for. Obviously I'm grateful for suggestions I can consider, but I'm not strictly interested in just a 'get this'.
I'm interested in finding out why you chose your mats, and what you look for when choosing. That way, I hope to figure out what I want by proxy. -
I chose the eXactMat because of its versatility. I game a lot on my couch and bed, not always a desk, so a hard pad (the eXactMat is anodized aluminum) remains sturdy and flat no matter what it's on, unlike a cloth pad which contours to whatever it's on. I also love the dual surfaces. I don't use the Control side very much, but it comes in handy when you want to be able to move one pixel at a time. And the memory foam eXactRest is definitely one of the more comfortable wrist rests I've ever used. It's not attached to the pad, so it works perfectly with either the Speed or Control side.
If you're on a tight budget, Rocketfish (Best Buy's in-house brand) has their own dual-sided gaming mouse pad that's pretty much their own re-branded eXactMat, only it's slightly more square and doesn't have a matching wrist rest. -
Ive got both the Razer Mantis (control) and Goliathus (speed) in Oversized pads. They are thick pads which has great tracking and smooth feel if used on a flat surface. Also Easy to clean and roll away.
Though Steel series QCK is what i see most hardcore gamers use.
What mouse are you using anyway Vogelbung? -
razer destructor is freaking smooth mat but its expensive @ 40bucks. it wears down the teflon grips on the mouse quicker than softmats, but then that's why i have 12 extra pairs of mamba feet lying around. i change it every 3 months just so it feels smoother than it already is.
for softmats (and no budget cap), would say the QcK series or the new hard/soft duo razer megasoma. for hard only mats, the best is destructor. or maybe even the steelseries SX if you dont mind resting your hand on cold metal lulz. -
The XPS pad is a little on the wide side of me in terms of necessity, so I tend to use it portrait, or at a ~260-degree angle. My mouse holding clasp doesn't seem to favour a wrist cutout - so I'd probably be better off with a rectangular one...? -

Its time for me to get a new pad I guess. I am super happy with my cheapo cloth/rubber one I have. Its a thick rubber on the bottom that keeps it from sliding and a good cloth material on top that is not super slick but also not grippy.
I do poorly with super slick pads I lose my control and I do all my movement from the wrist and rest my wrist on a pad so I need very precise movement and control. I think those that use the slick type pads go for more arm movement for a loss of control is not as big because the movement is larger.
I dont even have room on my desk for a large pad.
I did some tracking down and here is a good price for the exactmat & wrist rest - http://www.buy.com/prod/razer-exact...dle-gaming-mouse-pad/q/loc/101/202423294.html
Free Shipping, No Tax, and you can use bing.com cashback to bring it under $30.00
As for the QcK wich seems it will be the better fit for me.
Here is the mini that should be the same size as the pad I use now for about $10.00 shipped
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=205728933&listingid=10821917 (ironic its also buy.com with that price, amazon was close)
for the full size pad Walmart wins with only about $12.00 or so
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/prod...0000003142050&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=11612598
and if you want to pay a bit more for some graphics I found this one:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=209958834&listingid=37629109
I'll mull it over some and order one tonight I think.
Edit: so much for mulling it over lol just ordered the normal size QcK from wallmart and it was just under $12.00 shipped, the pad I have now works fine but its white... so it got dirty from use so its more of a cosmetic upgrade. I went with QcK since I like the feel of my cloth pad I have now so it should be a natural move to the new one rather than experiment with a new material/type, also I may need to cut it down to fit my desk the razer would be hard to do that with if its got metal in it. I also already have a wrist rest I use, though it could use a replacement soon too as its getting worn down. -
I guess I'd have to try one of these super slick pads as I've never had one before. The XPS pad has a slight texture which is enough to brake the mouse somewhat, without causing inertia.

I've scored most of my kills on a Papa Johns Pizza box top.

Steelseries QcK+ FTW. Only mouse pad i've used for the last 5 years.

what is that little knob thing on the far left, for speaker volume i assume? if so which speakers are they? how is the X6 kb? it looked good in picture, specially with the detachable numpad. i know you are a headset junky, so if you have tried em, any opinions on the plantronics gamecom 777?
thxs -
I can vouch for the Plantronics 777, I've used it and it's a fantastic headset. I highly recommend it. I own its stereo cousin, the 377 (exact same headset but without the USB sound card)

The Razer Exactmat with Exactrest dropped a few bucks today on Amazon. It's currently $24.98, just 2 cents short of free shipping. -
Regular QCK is out of stock at Wal-Mart, guess I'll settle for $13.11 shipped: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=205728934&listingid=10244203

I'm using QCK Mini and it fits nicely..
anyway, the real reason I'm posting is because I wanna see surfasb does mine LOL -
A pizza box top is a little on the big side.
It doubles as a scratch pad though. The QCk Mini sure can't do that.
