So I want to get an external keyboard. I don't want to pay 60$ for a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard (which is what I want) since if I spend that much, I might as well go to mechanical keyboards.

Which brings me to my next point... How ARE mechanical keyboards? Worth their price? Where can I try one?

i dont know if this is much help, but i did a little googling and i found that this may be the only brand of illuminated mechanical keyboards (at least on the forum i was on)

    Deck Keyboards

id like to thank you, i've always noticed how certain keyboards felt better than others, but i didn't know why..
now i know it's because they are mechanical

Default:Mechanical Switch Keyboards Sorted By Switch - geekhack forums

^ That guide and the forum in general have lots of good reviews and discussions about mechanical keyboards. Give it a read! I have a cheapo iOne Scorpius that I got for $59 shipped.

I say keyboards are more of a personal preference, even for mechanical keyboards there are key switches that provides completely different tactile feedback.

and they generally last up to 10 years or so. well they say 50-100 million key strokes.. I have a happy hacker Professional 2 keyboard. But i dont think you want to be spending 250 dollars on a board...

I think my typing has probably gone up 10-15 wpm since i got the keyboard a month ago.

Happy Hacking Professional 2 (Dark Gray) - elitekeyboards.com - Products

the version i have doesnt have a number pad or hte F keys, or directional keys... its a space saving keyboard. I love it for gameing that way i dont have to reach to far for the mouse.

That website also carries other top of the line mechanical keyboards...

Also you can get the steel series mechanical keyboard at any major outlet. It has the Cherry black switches i believe, its a very nice board, very durable as well. i think its guarenteed for 5-10 years and 50 million key strokes.

I personally got the keyboard for
    1. Quality feel , since im typing on it so much
    2. Space saving
    3. Durability, it will out-last for the next 3-4 computers i will own.
    4. they are built like tanks, and not like cheap logitech rubber dome keyboards that only last a year or so before i wear them out.

Anyways you dont have to spend 250 dollars like I did on a top of the line board. you can get decent boards, like the steel series for a decent price....
