I currently have 2 smaller External hard drives for my laptop. One 250GB and one 200GB... but I would prefer to just have ONE! So I'm considering just selling the 2 I currently have, and getting a 500GB. I had an unused 500GB Western Digital that I sold because I didn't have eSATA and decided I didn't want it, plus I'd rather have something other than a WD drive (and something with Firewire if possible).

I've been doing a lot of research to find the best drive... I'd prefer a dual Firewire/USB drive, but USB only is fine. No eSATA. I've narrowed it down to either LaCie (porsche) or the Fantom Titanium II. Both are very respectively priced, and have very high reviews on Amazon.com and Newegg.com. I read a lot of negative things about the other 500GB drives I could find... The LaCie is USB only, however I would consider it due to the vast amount of good comments it received.

Anyway, anyone have any thoughts on this? Anyone own either of these drives?

    Thanks.

i actually owned the LaCie before and currently use the Fantom. to tell the truth, the transfer rates for the two are about the same, but the Fantom tended to run hotter than the LaCie.

what else are you looking at comparing between the two?

Not sure... just thought I'd get some general opinion. The titanium of the Fantom is supposedly to help keep it cool. I'm a little skeptical of that. Were both your drives USB? If I got the Fantom, I'd probably use the Firewire. Why did you go from LaCie to Fantom?

    thanks.

i used USB for both drives. For the LaCie, it would tend to get warm to the touch but not unbearably so in about an hour. The Fantom gets hot in about 10 minutes (and not even accessed).

I switched because i accidentally dropped the LaCie which caused the drive to lose some of the folders stored on it. just to be safe, i got a new drive.

I was fine with the LaCie, and the Fantom works well too. For the most part, the only issue i have is the heat from the Fantom
