I've been very interested in the laptop coolers that folks have been talking about recently but I was less interested in cooling the laptop than I was in cooling myself, as I deliberately bought a small laptop (the Dell M1330) with the express purpose of being able to comfortably compute with a laptop actually on my lap. While it wasn't unbearably hot, it really wasn't comfortable and I came across mention of the Lapinator either at this site in an earlier post or during an Amazon shopping spree. I've been using it now for almost a week and thought I'd mention it to other folks who might have been looking for something similar.

Looks wise, it's very simple. Not especially pretty, just functional. It's a rigid platform on the top to which you affix rubber feet to raise the back of your laptop, which not only provides a better typing angle but has the advantage of creating a gap for the hot air to escape.

    TOP OF LAPINATOR:

    BOTTOM OF LAPINATOR:
The bottom of the Lapinator has cushiony bolsters, which is what rests on your legs. It doesn't transfer heat to your legs and feels nice and comfy.

Width wise, this just fits the M1330 perfectly. Length wise, it's longer than the M1330 and I actually put on 3 additional rubber feet an inch or 2 below the original ones I affixed in order to lower the Dell so that the laptop ends right at the edge of the Lapinator. This was just my preference for typing convenience. There are also larger sizes available for larger laptops and there is a mouse extension available; haven't tried that so don't know how functional it is.

Again, this is not for cooling your laptop. Check out the sticky thread in the forum for information on the Zalmans and other models. This is just for the specific function of being able to use your portable laptop portably and on the top of your lap. I have been using this without the laptop slipping or sliding and it felt much more comfortable than having the laptop sit on a book on my lap.

Bought this at Amazon for $19.95.

Lapinator... probably formed from laptop and -inator.

But to French hearing ears like mine is sound like it is formed from lapin and -ator. Lapin means bunny in French so I thought you wrote a review of some device which has do to with bunnies. A laptop for bunnies? A bunny shaped laptop peripheral?

Anyway, looks like an interesting cooler.

Different cultures, I guess. I heard more a reference to "The Terminator." American culture, you know, we just love our media references, no matter how bad they are. As in Lapinator terminates laptop heat.

    Thanks for the review.

I've purchased this and the mouse add on from the US (£25 all in - which is cheaper than the lapinator alone in the UK!) Tend to use the notebook on the lap and in bed so this should be ideal. Hoping it will fit 15.4" widescreen as on the spec screen it just says 15".

    Thanks

I've had one of these for about a year or so and it works great for using a smaller laptop on your lap. Very comfortable even after a few hours.

I use it with an Acer Travelmate 2423 which is a 14" widescreen. The lapinator is almost exactly the same width as the laptop (~13") but it is quite a bit deeper/longer (~12"). Not sure about using a 15.4" on it but you should get an idea from those measurements (13" wide x 12" deep).

I also bought the mouse add-on but found it a pain to use (due to it's size and position) and now just use the mouse on the couch, etc where it tracks good enough for general use.
