I just ordered the new Dell 1520 15.4in with the 9 cell battery.

Does anyone have any real life, first hand, recommendations of some great backpacks that are confirmed as the laptop "fitting" for sure. I was looking at the north face surge but was unsure whether my 1520 would fit.

    Width: 14.12" (35.8cm)
    Height: 1.47" (3.7cm) front - 1.65" (4.5cm) back
    Depth: 10.59" (26.9cm)

    -Thanks

    Consider the Kensington Contour backpack.

Consider the Tom Bihn Brain Bag and Brain Cell combo.

It's not perfect, but I find it's great for the following reasons:

    1. It doesn't obviously look like a laptop bag to the average person, so you're less likely to be targeted.

    2. It actually leaves enough room for other stuff. In my backpack, 90% of the space and weight needs to go to numerous large encyclopedia-sized volumes. The Brain Bag lets me fit what I need (barely).

    3. It's decent protection. The outside pack itself offers some protection against the elements (waterproof and all that) and some shelter, although it's not heavily padded. However, inside, the Brain Cell is suspended in the middle of the compartment, which provides a fair amount of cushioning space. The Cell itself is an extremely hard sleeve that'll protect your laptop quite well. I actually would've preferred if the backpack itself provided more cushioning (it sort feels like you're paying $140 for just the two clips and straps to keep the brain cell suspended :p), but overall the combination is good.

I want a heavily padded backpack for mine. I also don't want a Targus because it screams. "laptop inside, steal me." I'm waiting for osprey to come out with this one ( http://www.ospreypacks.com/Packs/ReSourceSeries/Circuit/ because I've used their other backpacks as a major outdoors enthusiast and they are awesome. It's all they make and they have recycled ones coming out this fall that look great. I love the messenger bags, specifically the transit because they are more of a shell than a floppy bag. However, I'm getting a 1520 w/ 9 cell and with my teaching materials, bags are too heavy for one shoulder. My brother has the Surge and likes it, but North face has a stigma attached to it in outdoor circles.

The shinza.com site is a bit messy, but the products are fantastic. They import them from Japan and the quality is outstanding! They gave me a discount code for 20% off when I emailed them, too. Pretty fast reply, within a few hours...the inside protection of their sleeves feels like the sound insulator foam in a recording studio. The foam turns back to its regular shape after a few minutes. It's rigid memory-like foam is amazing at absorbing shock. I had it on my car seat and hit the breaks too hard, the laptop went flying to the floor (no comments...i know i know), but I had it in the ZeroShock sleeve. I was so glad. Not a mark or weird glitches after the incident. The 17" sleeve was perfect for my Inspiron 1520!! It has a little bit of room on the side, but it works great.
