i ordered the laptop 2 days ago and it's currently in production:

Precision M4700 Mobile Workstation Details | Dell

as you can see it has a square shape and is thicker than average modern laptop. the version i configured was $2,000 so it is certainly not a disposable item and must be protected.

    dimensions:

    Width: 14.80" / 376mm
    Height: (front/back) 1.29"/32.7mm to 1.44"/36.5mm
    Depth: 10.08" / 256.0mm
    Weight: 6.33lbs / 2.87kg

the AC adapter is a large, but thin 180W unit:

NEW Dell Precision M4600 180W AC Adapter 74X5J DA180PM111 ADP-180MB, high quality with low price. - laptop battery - laptop batteries pack

don't know exact dimensions, but hopefully you can judge from the size of the 115V plug.

this laptop is actually for my pops. he is rather old and small and works in Brooklyn, NY which is not a very safe place - so i would like a case that doesn't draw unnecessary attention to itself.

what i would like is something quality made, elegant but not expensive looking, with plenty of protection. with shoulder strap. doesn't have to be slim.

it should have room for laptop, AC adapter, power cord, letter-size clipboard, letter size folded up AutoCad drawings about 1/4" thick total, tape measure, 12" ruler, pen and pencil, earbud headphones, point and shoot digital camera, cell phone, water bottle, and tupperware box sized for this:

or can you recommend a store in Brooklyn, Manhattan or Queens where i could come with the laptop and try the fit ?

    thanks !

Just get a backpack. If he's old then an additional 4Kg in a shoulder bag isn't doing his back any good.

Elecom Zeroshock III kept my M4400 in shape for years and i'm getting a Zeroshock IV for the Vaio S15 i ordered. The padding is great and the rubber outside further protects from impacts, sharper objects/corners and makes it splash waterproof. the IV fits the new 16:10 laptops. Combine that with any bag and you're good to go + you get the extra space in your bag ofcourse :)
