So I flew from Detroit to San Francisco yesterday.. I had a lot of time to think...
One of the things I thought about was... Why hasn't there been a laptop cooler with a big battery built into it yet?
I can see two problems with this, both can be solved:
1) Heat. Not a big deal IMO.. Easy to contend with when the device your attaching a battery to has fans on it. And it can't produce that much more heat then the Laptop cooler that has a built in hard drive tray on it...
2) Weight. Another one thats not a big deal.. Laptop coolers are big and bulky anyways, I don't think anybody would care about weight when they have 4 or 5 hours of extra battery life.
Anybody else with me on this? Wouldn't it be awesome? You could do one big battery, or 2 or 3 smaller batteries around the outside of a fan.. I think it would be awesome!
Have a universal connector on it so you can plug it into any laptop.
The only other big issue would be power regulation.. different laptops require different amounts of power... So that might be an issue.. but I think theres a few ways to solve that issue though too...

have a design on my desk by monday, Johnson!
-
please sir, could I have some more (time)?

Not a bad idea, but when you really look at how and when people use notebook coolers I don't it would be a big hit though. First of all, battery power is most needed when you don’t have access to a power outlet, how many of you use a notebook cooler when you are on the move (air plane, train , etc.. where you don’t have a power socket)? . And for those who travel a lot, weight and space is a bigger concern than you think, they would rather carry an extra battery than a notebook cooler with one.
-
Yea everything you said is very true..
However.. I'm thinking of it like this.. My m15x won't game while on battery power.. It sucks. I go from 180fps to 30fps in a video stress test going from plugged in to battery..
But if you had a substantial battery on a laptop cooler, you could game at normal levels cause your laptop would think your still plugged in..
Even if I got an hour or two of real gaming while mobile and plugged into a heavy laptop cooler I'd be more than happy! -
it's not a bad idea, but this feature would only be caterin to a small group of people. us, as notebook enthusiasts would love it.
now, 1 thing i have always wondered was, why don't they just make notebooks with built-in kickstands. kinda like a keyboard. i mean...somethin so simple and so effective...i wonder why nobody has implemented this design yet. -
It would be a good idea but there are several reasons
1) no demand
2) heat (as you stated)
3) weight (as you stated)
4) it would likely have miserable battery life
5) it may have troubles fully powering the fans as design may be cheap
6) more lithium ion batteries will burden the ecological standard of the earth even more (disposal of batteries)
7) far easier just to have 2 (9cell) batteries and plug in a cooler that has an extra port or more so that you dont lose any.. -
Dell has kind of already done this with the battery slice.
-
Yes, Battery slice is a good example. There are other portable power units and small UPS systems (110/230v AC) that you can use to prolong the battery life and trick your notebook in to thinking that it is running on main power, but they are not as portable nor as light as an extra notebook battery.
I don't know about m15x, but I feel there should be a way to force everything to run at full power even under battery. -
-
Sony has, well, kind of. It's called their large capacity battery.
Raises the notebook up by an inch or so. Doesn't retract though and adds weight.
-
yea, dell's 9-cell does that as well.
i'm just saying that, its such a simple feature that'll add so many benefits. i wonder how come nobody has put the 2 together. it could even be a selling point for some. -
Maybe to make more money? An uninformed person won't use a cooler, will buy a new computer if it breaks, and repeat the cycle. I think the uninformed make up a majority of laptop users. A lot of people asked me why I use a cooler when the laptop already has a fan. Some didn't even know it was a cooler; they thought it's part of the computer. "Why is your laptop thick?"
Laptop Cooler Idea...
