    Yes...

If you're in a room sitting at a desk. Home, college, library a laptop lock gives you a little more security. They can be pretty easily defeated but it might make the thief move onto the next computer. I use one while in my dorm room.

    It's cheap insurance.

You probably have a kensington lock slot...any normal laptop lock will work, check your local electronics store. I have a kensington combo lock and have no complaints. There may be a few reviews if you look through the site.

It might keep the honest person honest, but don't expect it to stop someone who really wants it. I had a Belkin lock attached to my laptop here at work and someone got into the office over the weekend and just ripped the thing right out of the hole. Might make it hard for them to sell it, but that doesn't do me any good. I'd say keep it locked in a drawer if possible when you're not using it.

Very huge bummer about your laptop!! If it helps I am pretty sure keeping it locked in a draw be not have been any better then a laptop lock. Sadly those who want to steal something will find a way no matter what...one reason I like the new security features in systems even with the potential drawbacks they have.

I like the idea of a laptop lock for some places where it would be nice to be able to walk 20 feet away and know someone is going to have to be able to break the lock somehow and run really fast carrying a laptop and part of a table or desk before I grab them. They just stop the crime of opportunity as suggested. If someone looking to snag a system see's a lock then odds are they will simply move on to a system w/o a deterent.

If you are out and about or in a dorm room it's $40 well spent. Honestly if I was in college today I am not sure what I would do, but odds are I would have it with me all the time in my pack. I know when I was in college there were few times I was w/o a book pack anyway. Even at meals. Then again that was almost 30 years ago....shuuuuder, feeling OLD now... ;)

Still the best security is to just close the lid and carry it with you to grab a beverage or visit the "throne room." ;) Of course I am sure people steal text books left on a table now too... :(

wow... they had schools 30 years ago??? :p

same here. got 2 of my laptops stolen in 1 year during uni, both attached to a lock (sorry forgot which brand, but tbh, it doesn't matter), and both got yanked out. one was a cheapass HP, so taht was ok... but the second one was a nice fujitsu (sorry forgot which models for both as that was like 3 yrs ago)... sigh...

best measure is seriously carry it around with u if u don't trust the security (not the 'security' as in the guards, but security as in 'sense of security' :D) at where u're staying at. it's always good to insure it, just in case...

    Let me just say this:

I had a $2600 Trek road bike 3 years ago. With a very heafty duty lock, far stronger than any laptop lock.

My bike was jacked anyway. I found the lock right where I locked it up cut in half with a power tool of some type.

If they want your laptop -- they will take your laptop.

Laptops are portable. So if you're at the library -- take it with you to the bathroom.
